The other day, I made a post about how to train one's discipline when an interesting question came up multiple times:

"I know what to do, but how do I negotiate with myself to do it?"

And so, to answer that question I made this video right here.

The first thing you need to know about negotiating with yourself is that you have ALREADY lost the battle when you do! Your mind will ALWAYS gravitate to something that is fun and easy in the current moment if left to its own devices.

It's an evolutionary instinct all of us have.

Discipline is the opposite.

And trust me, it is HARD!

For most of my life, I didn't get anything worthwhile done, at all! Because I (nor anyone else) never taught myself how to be disciplined, I stayed stuck in life for years. As a result of this, my mental health dwindled and got worse over time.

Here's the change I had to make:

It's kinda like being a parent.

If your child is running around joyfully playing, and they run towards a busy road, it is your responsibility to pull them back. The child might hurt a bit from that. They might cry. They might throw a tantrum. BUT YOU WON"T CARE!

Not when the alternative is them getting hit by a car!

That's how to think about #discipline!

In this analogy, your (subconscious) mind is the child. The thinking part of your brain is you as the responsible parent. You've got to sit yourself down to do the difficult things, regardless of how much your mind is kicking and screaming!

If not, life is gonna hit you like a truck!

And so, the lesson I learned is to never negotiate with yourself!

You know what to do, so do it regardless of how you feel about it.

And the important thing to realize here is that you can train discipline, just like any other muscle. Know it won't be perfect. My consistency was terrible, and yours will likely be too. However, you will get better at it over time.

But that's not all...

As you continue to do the right things, that you know you should be doing, you're going to feel more fulfilled and better about yourself. It's one of the best ways to build confidence, self esteem and improve your mental health.
