Productivity Tips: Are You Being Productive or Just Busy?
A lot of what people consider being productive, is little more than a feel-good vanity metric of being "busy". When you look at someone's job, you'll most likely be able to find a lot of activities that take a TON of time but only add little or nothing to the organisation's goals.
And in people's personal lives, it's often the same story (if not worse).
So what does being productive mean?
How do you know you're wasting time?
In the essence, productivity is about how effective you are at moving forward with a certain goal.
If we use driving as an example, two things greatly matter:
The speed at which you're driving and the direction in which you're going.
When it comes to productivity, how good & fast you are at a given task is the speed of the car. Doing the RIGHT activity is what sets the direction in which you're driving.
Simply put:
No matter how good you are at something and no matter how many hours you spend doing it, if that activity does not contribute to your goals, it's meaningless!
Most people major in minor things.
Meaning they prefer spending time on little activities that don't move the needle. Because messing up here has no consequences. People often avoid the most important tasks out of a featr of failure...
And so they end up being "busy" while doing nothing worthwhile.
First identify what ACTUALLY moves the needle and then, go and do that thing!
