At some point productivity became a moral category. Not just a practical tool but evidence of character. The productive person is virtuous. Disciplined. Worthy. The unproductive person has something to answer for.
I absorbed this so thoroughly that rest carried guilt and leisure required justification. What did you do this weekend became a question i answered with a list to prove i had not wasted the time, as if time spent enjoying being alive counted as waste unless it also produced something i could report back on.
Some of the most productive periods of my life were also some of the most hollow. I was generating output consistently, hitting targets, maintaining the kind of visible momentum that gets approval, and underneath it the whole thing felt like performance without purpose. Productive in a direction i had not chosen consciously, just stumbled into and kept going because stopping would have required asking myself what i actually wanted, which felt more uncomfortable than continuing.
Output is not the same as meaning. A full schedule is not the same as a full life. The capacity to produce things efficiently is a useful skill but it says nothing about whether you are becoming the kind of person you actually respect or spending your time on what genuinely matters to you.
I know people who are not particularly productive by any measurable standard who are some of the most genuinely alive human beings i have met. Present. Connected. Doing things slowly but with care and actual pleasure in the doing. They would probably not make a good productivity case study. They seem fine with that.
And i know people who are tremendously productive who are also tremendously disconnected from anything that actually matters to them personally. Just moving fast in a direction they chose years ago and have not examined since.
Produce things. Make things. Work at things. But do not let your output become your identity or your justification for being here.
You are allowed to matter beyond what you manage to get done.
