Why Do we need beta testing?

We live in the age of computers and mobile phones and as users we are constantly using software products, games and other related products.

Be it a game or a software a user is spoilt for choice as to where to invest his time and money.
After all there are so many games and software to vie for the buyers attention that it becomes important to stand out.
Even before that the big question is does the application perform the task that it is designed for?

What is beta testing?

Beta testing for a game or a software is all about testing a game or a software from the end users perspective and giving feedback to the developers as to its performance and any bugs found.

In common jargon the role of a beta tester can be seen as a person who steps into the shoes of the end user to get a feel of the game or software.
Since he is using the game /software on his computer or device so this environment is referred to as a uncontrolled environment where the game or software may behave differently then that of a controlled environment at the developers end.

The testing process not only reaffirms the proper working of the software but also looks at giving feedback as to various working features, fails or any behavior or unusual outcome that may arise during the use of the product or game.

So even though a beta tester steps into the shoes of the end user but acts as the eyes and the ears of the developer giving him/her the feedback about every stage of the game or software.

What a beta tester is actually required to do

What does the role of the beta tester involves?

1. Test the game or the software to the fullest with the idea of testing all its levels and features thus gaining and sharing the full over view of the software being tested.
2. During the use and testing phase always look, analyze and evaluate the product from the end users perspective.
   3)Try to use and test the product on as many devices, platforms or operating systems as possible so as to get a varied experience about the product usage.
3. If you are testing a product make sure to document any error codes or unusual behavior to the utmost detail so that it may be replicated at the developers end.
4. At times there may be some known issues that the developer is aware of however while being used in the actual environment the program feature may give rise to unforeseen performance so never assume that the developer knows this already.
   Be factual and document a precise and accurate error reporting and include as much information about the environment in which the program/game is tested.
