I love when things work out in the cooking as well as they did in my imagination. One of the best decisions I ever made was choosing to abandon strict observance of recipes and "wing it." I have made some fabulous meals doing that -- but of course, the downside is ... it's a one time shot. I tell @catweasel, "Enjoy it ... because you'll never have it again." I suppose I could get organized and keep better track of what I do -- but so far ... that hasn't happened.
The marinara sauce I made last night, for instance, was some of the best I've ever eaten. And it may be something as simple as the olive oil and garlic version of the diced tomatoes I used instead of ... whatever I happen to grab. (My usual strategy.) Next time I make the stuff, I'll try that again and see what happens. I consider my marinara sauce "restaurant quality" to begin with. This was just a tiny bit better.
Love this idea of soup -- so I can imagine how much your husband enjoyed it. Soups and chowders are among my favorites to start with!! (And homemade bread!! I told The Weasel the other day -- we have got to learn to use this breadmaker!! )
