I never thought about that aspect, but you are right - their job, now I think about it, is causing pain to children and adults - they trade in pain - maybe there is a terminator gene or something that is switched on in people that end up doing this- you get high suicide rates with people who come back from war - because it is not a human state killing people - maybe its the same for inflecting pain.
