Hello everyone,
So as I mentioned in my previous post, I decided to try this weekend ranked using a deception deck even though deception was not one of my strongest traits and it is not a god that I am very experienced with.
However, after trying it for quite a while before the weekend rank, and shifting between several decks, I began to get some wins and gotten better with it pre-weekend rank. But since weekend rank games are always more brutal, I struggled a lot on several occasion and was not getting good results but I decided to complete the whole 25 games with deception no matter what the outcome was.
So in this post I will be sharing the results and how did the experience go, and where I struggled most maybe with improvements for the future even though I still do not know a lot about the new CSR and how is it going to affect deception.
The Main Deck I Used
This was the exact same deck that I posted last time and it was my starting game for this weekend rank event. Although I kept trying to shift and change some cards throughout my games to try and get better results which I will be sharing in a bit.
Matchups Breakdown and Results:
| Matchups | Wins/Matches | Win rate |
|---|---|---|
| Light | 1/2 | |
| Nature | 3/9 | |
| Magic | 2/4 | |
| Death | 2/3 | |
| War | 3/5 | |
| Deception | 1/2 | |
| Overall | 12/25 | 48% |
So as we can see, I ended this weekend event with only 12 wins. It was not a good result for me and even though I saw myself struggling I wanted to stick with deception the whole 25 games so I was rotating and switching several cards while going which I thought will help depending on why the games were not going well.
Some rotation Cards:
Dark Knives
I noticed that going late game was doing me harm most of the times with the deck, so added 2 copies of these to maybe help get more damage faster and also sometimes clear annoying strong creatures with an average creature I control. It ended up helpful sometimes but still not enough maybe it fits way better with the deck was pure hidden rush.
Jinxblade Duelist
I felt like sometimes that the deck was missing creatures. So I added another copy of Jinxblade to have more creature in it. At the same time I was thinking that it might be a good clearing creature since it has 4 strength, or one that I can constantly hide and get face damage with it depends on what I need in the game.
Gorgon Gargoyle
After realizing that also trying to put on a faster pace was not working very well for me, I decided to add this card since it might give me a round with its sleep that I get to decided what to do best with my creatures or spell that can help me control the rhythm of the game afterwards. However, most of the times it did not live to see the day :p
Reason why I struggled
There were several very obvious reasons why I performed like that this week and it is not because the deck is so bad or deception is not meta, but the mains reasons for this are:
A lot of control decks played
This week was FILLED with control decks all over. From nature, to war, to BWD. This did not help me get any wins at all since control decks are so strong at the moment and it is so hard to finish the game early against them. I mean just look at this:
Just few example that can ruin the whole game for you from removing your creatures constantly, to infinitely sleeping them or getting tons of heals and using them on the SAME round and thus turning the whole game around. These are just few examples of many that made control decks so hard to play against.
Too much Removals
This meta is also FILLED with removal cards and they are not only your typical expensive cards. No even cheap one that can also ruin your early game for you and these existed everywhere which gave the control decks also a great chance to reach late game. Also a lot of my ordered creatures like the Prison Escapee or Shackled Acolyte did not even survive to the end of their order!
These are also some example of removals that made me struggle this week with a lot more existing. So it was tough for me to end the games early, and impossible to wins late since most decks were control decks and so good at late game.
Not having enough experience
It is not like I am complaining or something about the game, I know I still do not have a lot of experience with deception since I was new to it. I made some mistakes, made bad plays and sometimes I did not know what decision to take or what to do in certain situations so it came out worst than it should be. Also sometimes the lack of good starting hands worked its magic and costed me some games.
Final thoughts and advice
To be honest, even though the experience was a bit tilting and did not get me the results I wanted, I felt like I experience something new in the game and was having different time than I usually play. Playing a deck that you did not master yes in tough matches will make you experience different moments and make the game even more exciting and also frustrating at the same time to say the least :p
However, I do not regret it because now I am sure that I know a bit more about deception and not only about 1 or 2 gods and in this way in case the meta shifted somehow to deception I am up and ready and all it costed me was a few divine order packs. There are still and I can still get more packs in the future hopefully but the experience itself was good!
So I would advice everyone not to stick on 1 god always and do try not new, but anything that you have not experience before in tough matches like weekend ranks, do go for it and try and do not care much about the results because it is better for the long term I would say. You never know where the meta might land next and you can be up and ready before anyone else and snatch yourself a historical weekend!
So that was my experience with deception for this week and my thoughts about it, hope your experience went much better than mine and that you are all grinding and getting those packs! Let me know if you have any advice for me or any decks I should try in the future that I still have not tried yet! See you on the next one.
Mad Love, Peace out <3
