I'll admit, I didn't know, and all of this talk about net neutrality made me scratch my head and finally go "what's that?"
So I did some Googling and two adequate YouTube videos later I was an expert on the issue. Or at least informed to my level of comfort.
But it also made me ask a question; a question I would like to pose to you :
What if we crowd sourced the internet?
Some would say that's the intention of things such as Ethereum, and its Ethereum Naming Service, but we still need a way to connect all of the machines together.
So how could we do that? How could we connect everything without ISPs? Well Fon may have some ideas.
I stumbled across Fon when I was reading about the infrastructure of the internet and found this Entrepreneur article (I highly recommend reading the article) and it intrigued me.
Then I found this article and it got me thinking more about how the mechanics might work with a neighborhood network (could be a scary thought from a security standpoint).
What if each neighborhood had a main point of contact, who then used what would amount to a powerful Wi-Fi router to send data to all their neighbors, who then compensated him directly for his involvement in bringing them the internet.
Now I realize that this wouldn't be a solution for the net neutrality issue that we're seeing now but it got me thinking...
What do you all think? Am I off my rocker here or could there be a future where the internet is not distributed by big Isp companies but instead delivered directly to you through a huge peer to peer network?
Also I will mention that I'm over in the U.S. and Fon doesn't have the same presence here. But do any of you Steemians have any experience with them?
