I'd like to start off this week with one of the songs I'm most proud of from my recently released album Change of Mind.
This song is called American Dream and is a turn of phrase on the concept of the modern "American Dream".
I think the way the "American Dream" has been sold to us in recent times has very little to do with American values.
The slogan was once used as a rallying cry for the true values of this country, but it has been perverted into a materialist-pursuit-of-happiness at the cost of what actually makes the foundation of this country great.
This song is about the real world cost of that materialist dream and paints the materialist version of the "American Dream" as something we need to wake up from in order to solve our biggest problems.
Lyrics:
From the feet of the rockies to cities of east lives a people with a spirit unmatched
Everyday folks working hard for tokens to trains derailing the tracks
Raised in a world with resources free, we’ve forsaken the wisdom of past
And the storm outside is bashing our walls as the shadows begin to cast
How long can a land with thirst treat its water like trash?
How long will we pretend we don’t contribute to the wrath?
And walking the line of needless loss when will we find the path?
Plain to see we’re sleeping fast, dreaming an American Dream
The wolf of today is not crass nor crude with his clever words revised
He walks among the scattered flock wearing a shepherd’s disguise
But he does not bit at their legs as they stand for a fear they would see through his lies
No he shears the wool from the backs of the sheep then he pulls it up over their eyes
How long can a land with thirst treat its water like trash?
How long will we pretend we don’t contribute to the wrath?
And walking the line of needless loss when will we find the path?
Plain to see we’re sleeping fast, dreaming an American Dream
