Throughout history, humans have discovered dinosaur bones, though they often failed to recognize them for what they truly were. For the ancient Chinese and other cultures around the world, these bones were considered the remains of great dragons or other mythical creatures. It wasn't until the 17th century that dinosaurs received the scientific attention they deserved. It was then that the first dinosaur bones were officially collected, examined, and cataloged, marking the beginning of the world's fascination with these animals.

This fascination is evident in our popular movies, our culture, and the holidays we celebrate. One of these is Dinosaur Day, celebrated on June 1st, which allows us to connect with our love for these animals. Robert Plot is credited with discovering the first dinosaur bone, although such bones had been found for thousands of years. However, Plot failed to identify them as belonging to a dinosaur.
Instead, he thought they were the remains of a giant humanoid, which is completely wrong. What he actually found and described was the lower end of a femur belonging to a Megalosaurus. So no, Plot didn't find a giant. It wasn't until William Buckland, a professor of geology at Oxford University, that a dinosaur fossil was correctly identified.

Throughout the 19th century, paleontologists searched for fossils, leading to what is now known as the Bone Wars. Between the 1870s and 1890s, Othniel Charles Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope engaged in a rivalry to unearth dinosaur bones, a rivalry that ultimately led to their financial ruin. However, the Bone Wars were not a total loss, as they fueled the public's fascination with dinosaurs, a fascination that continues to this day.
