It is really surprising what ends up at thrift shops sometimes too. I had an awesome, brand new in box luxury entertainment center that I literally paid like $6 for that I found at one. The box looked like it fell off a truck and the entertainment center did have a small crack at the end where it fell, but it was almost in perfect condition. So I don't know why some things go end up in the trash like that, but it could be a bunch of reasons. Sometimes people just need to move and don't feel like going through the small step of listing it for free, giving it away to a friend, or listing for sale
