I think it comes down to optimism vs. pessimism. Now it's true that if your dog just died, someone sideswiped your car, and you drop your phone in the toilet, it might be reason to complain. I can only imagine an Oregon trail settler dying of dysentery and his friend complaining about running out of pumpkin spice lattes.
