If you are a newbie, you'll be struggling to get some upvotes for your post.
Even though you'll be having some good content in the posts but still no one would be upvoting it. Right.
And upvote from a whale or a dolphin is next to impossible. They are there only to upvote if you pay them some SBD then they'll upvote a fraction of their steempower and other then that they don't upvote.
And as far as the logic of steemit of "Upvoting the good content" can go to Hell.
So you are on your own.
But there are other ways that can help you with that.
One of them is PAL. a very nice community and they will upvote your posts and you don't have to pay them.

The idea here is very nice. You do some simple stuff like upvoting others post and you get curation rewards for that and you also earn points.
Now your earned points matter alot, because the worth of the points earned will be the upvote you get from this community.
In simple, if you earn $4 worth of points, then your last post will be upvoted until you get $4 worth of upvote.
So earn points and earn upvotes for your post. Simple. Isn't it ?
