Everyone has a joke! When we hang out with our friends, one of them might be a joker. Joking is actually good because life with friends is varied and colorful.
But, in some cases, there are our friends who are not happy with our jokes. Perhaps the joke hurts their feelings too much, or it's more of a mockery or ridicule. Now, this is where sometimes the joke can become a severe problem.
I once had a friend like that. When I was in college, my friend loved to joke around. There was no day that he didn't joke with me. Some jokes sometimes made me upset. But, I could restrain myself because his jokes were only limited to jokes.
But one day, I made a joke to my friend. I told him that his grade in a course was too low. Even though the course was not challenging. Even a small child would be able to get good grades. Well, my joke turned out to offend him. So he got angry and never spoke to me again.
After the incident, I realized that people who often joke are not happy when they are the butt of jokes. I tried apologizing to him, and we returned on good terms, although not as close as before.
A lighthearted joke can sometimes turn into a big fight! I encountered this at the school where I teach. Two students had gotten into a big fight. They also fought until their clothes were torn and dirty.
They were both called to the teachers' office. When they got there, they were both interrogated. The first student said that he did not accept the joking words given to him. Then, this first student also returned the joke so that his friend also could not accept the joke. They both mocked each other about each other's shortcomings.
The first student teased his friend by saying that his teeth looked like rabbits because his teeth looked bigger than rabbits. The second student returned the taunt by saying the first was a sissy. The two had a big fight. Then, who knows who started it? The two of them got into a fight by hitting each other.
The counselor and teacher paid serious attention to the case. They were both counseled. In such cases, both are guilty, and neither is correct. So both had to forgive each other and agree not to repeat the act.
Everything starts with words. If we cannot control our words wisely, guard our mouths so as not to hurt the feelings of others. If someone feels hurt by us, let alone hold a grudge, then things that we don't really want will happen.
I am a person who does not like to joke around. In my social life, I avoid confrontations that cause physical tension. So, I try not to hurt their feelings when talking to people. If I want to crack a joke, I have to choose the right words.
Instead of debating useless things, I now prefer to keep quiet.
