🇪🇸 ~ Cuando voluntariamente caí en el delicioso infierno del danmei sabía que este sería un amor complicado y de larga data. También sabía que enamorarme del diseño de alguno de sus personajes era tan inminente como que el cielo es azul.

🇺🇸 ~ When I voluntarily fell into the delicious hell of danmei I knew this would be a complicated and long-standing love affair. I also knew that falling in love with the design of one of its characters was as imminent as the sky is blue.

Cuando eres un Cosplayer que elabora sus propios Cosplays al 100%, casi de forma automática tu cerebro descompone el diseño de los personajes que vez en películas, comics o series, ¡nadie se salva de tu escrutinio!; pero los saltos culturales representan un reto absolutamente desafiante, "¿quieres hacer una imitación de lo que miras en la pantalla, o quieres hacer un traje real?."

When you are a Cosplayer who makes your own Cosplays 100%, almost automatically your brain breaks down the design of the characters you see in movies, comics or series, no one is spared from your scrutiny!; but the cultural leaps represent an absolutely challenging challenge, "do you want to make an imitation of what you see on the screen, or do you want to make a real costume?."

Siempre me planteo "¿cómo se vería este personaje en la vida real?" cuando decido agregarlo a mi lista de proyectos (en idioma Cosplayer, "Cosplans"), la frase por si sola puede sonar presuntuosa si no conoces a la persona, porque es fácil decirlo y en esta era digital donde las apariencias y la creación de expectativas que nunca o mediana o mediocremente se concretan están a la orden del día, hacer esa aseveración puede generar rechazo, y lo entiendo muy bien.

I always ask myself "how would this character look like in real life?" when I decide to add it to my list of projects (in Cosplayer language, "Cosplans"), the phrase itself may sound presumptuous if you do not know the person, because it is easy to say and in this digital age where appearances and the creation of expectations that never or medium or mediocrely materialize are the order of the day, making that statement can generate rejection, and I understand it very well.

Si me sigues hace un tiempo o conoces mi trabajo, sabrás que ese no es mi caso. Y esa ha sido mi principal quimera desde que me enamore de "Xie Lian", el protagonista de la novela "Tian Guan Ci Fu" (Heaven Official's Blessing) de Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (墨香铜臭); me he enamorado loca y perdidamente de este personaje, que si bien tiene un largo repertorio de atuendos, todos distan mucho de lo que he confeccionado hasta ahora; las prendas chinas de todos los personajes en este libro son holgadas, de telas ligeras y multicapas, cada pieza con una razón de ser, un nombre, un propósito y un tipo de tela especifico.

If you've been following me for a while or know my work, you'll know that's not my case. And that has been my main pipe dream ever since I fell in love with "Xie Lian", the protagonist of the novel "Tian Guan Ci Fu" (Heaven Official's Blessing) by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (墨香铜臭); I have fallen madly and hopelessly in love with this character, who while he has a long repertoire of outfits, they are all far from what I have made so far; the Chinese garments of all the characters in this book are loose-fitting, of light, multilayered fabrics, each piece with a reason for being, a name, a purpose and a specific type of fabric.

¡Y YO NO TENGO IDEA DE LA RAZÓN DE SER DE CADA UNA DE ESAS PIEZAS, NI SU NOMBRE NI SU PROPOSITO NI EL TIPO DE TELA QUE DEBE SER CADA UNA!, eso es un gran problema para mi porque esa información es VITAL para comprender el personaje, después de todo, la ropa evoca sentimientos en nosotros, estados anímicos, influye en nosotros mas de lo que creemos, y si quiero ser Xie Lian, necesito entender las ropas que usa Xie Lian.

AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT EVERY ONE OF THOSE PIECES IS FOR, NOR THEIR NAME OR PURPOSE OR WHAT TYPE OF FABRIC EACH ONE SHOULD BE!, that's a big problem for me because that information is VITAL to understanding the character, after all, clothes evoke feelings in us, moods, they influence us more than we think, and if I want to be Xie Lian, I need to understand the clothes Xie Lian wears.

Entonces si, este es un proyecto que he retrasado bastante porque la falta de información para mi representa un asunto que resolver, una investigación pendiente. Pude haber empezado y terminado el traje hace muchos meses solo mirando y replicando lo que a primera vista dedujera... pero yo no soy así, y actuar así es totalmente lo opuesto a lo que yo siento por este personaje, del que todos los días hace mas de un año leo fanfics con el primer café de la mañana. Mis sentimientos por Xie Lian son demasiado profundos y me duelen como el primer amor, es un sentimiento absoluto, espeso, contundente, y que hace mas dichosa mi vida por todo lo que la historia de este hombre desencadena y resuelve en mi.

So yes, this is a project that I have delayed a lot because the lack of information for me represents a matter to solve, a pending investigation I could have started and finished the costume many months ago just looking and replicating what at first sight I deduced... but I'm not like that, and acting like that is totally the opposite of how I feel about this character, of whom every day for over a year now I've been reading fanfics with the first coffee in the morning. My feelings for Xie Lian are too deep and hurt me like the first love, it is an absolute feeling, dense, overwhelming, and that makes my life happier because of everything that the story of this man triggers and resolves in me.

La semana pasada comenzó mi investigación para entender la ropa de Xie Lian, y apegándome a un sentido objetivo y realista, reconocí que lo mas sano era empezar por su atuendo blanco de taoísta, el mas simple de su repertorio canónico y del que tengo cero materiales reunidos.

Last week began my research to understand Xie Lian's clothing, and sticking to an objective and realistic sense, I recognized that the healthiest thing to do was to start with his white Taoist attire, the simplest of his canonical repertoire and one for which I have zero materials gathered.

Al escoger el conjunto de ropa, ahora surge la pregunta: ¿Cuál de todas las versiones de ese atuendo blanco voy a recrear?, porque si, un solo atuendo de un solo personaje de danmei, tiene diferentes referencias y multitud de ilustraciones oficiales (por adaptaciones a distintos formatos, eventos especiales y generación de mercancía).

When choosing the clothing set, now the question arises: Which of all the versions of that white outfit am I going to recreate?, because yes, a single outfit of a single danmei character, has different references and multitude of official illustrations (due to adaptations to different formats, special events and merchandise generation).

Para el deleite de todos los seres que pertenecemos a este fandom, solamente "el traje blanco" de Xie Lian cuenta con su versión manhua (comic espectacularmente dibujado por la diosa StarEmber), su versión donghua (la versión animada de la mano de Bilibili and Haoliners Animation League), su versión del audio drama, ilustraciones únicas según el país de cada adaptación de idioma que ha tenido la obra escrita (portadas e ilustraciones internas de la mano de artistas chinos, rusos, filipinos, españoles, y muchísimos más), ilustraciones y animaciones especiales por cada celebración tradicional China (festivales) y eventos especiales o aniversarios de la mano de los 2 primeros equipos de producción, y por supuesto las ilustraciones conmemorativas de cada año por el cumple años del personaje... Ah, y también está su versión "RingDoll", que vendría a ser la muñeca oficial del personaje, muy hermosa en detalle, y también muy costosa (unos 700 o 800USD aproximadamente)... Y EL LIVE ACTION QUE ESTA EN POSTPRODUCCION!

To the delight of all of us who belong to this fandom, only "the white suit" of Xie Lian has its manhua version (comic spectacularly drawn by the goddess StarEmber), its donghua (the animated version by Bilibili and Haoliners Animation League), its version of the audio drama, unique illustrations according to the country of each language adaptation the written work (covers and internal illustrations by Chinese, Russian, Filipino, Spanish, and many, many more artists), special illustrations and animations for each traditional Chinese celebration (festivals) and special events or anniversaries by the first 2 production teams, and of course the commemorative illustrations of each year for the birthday of the character... Ah, and also there's her "RingDoll" version, which would be the official doll of the character, very beautiful in detail, and also very expensive (about 700 or 800USD approximately)... AND THE LIVE ACTION THAT IS IN POSTPRODUCTION!

Después de mucho pensarlo y meditarlo con bastante cuidado, ésta ha sido mi decisión: Quiero elaborar un conjunto híbrido entre el diseño de StarEmber, la RingDoll, y 2 de mis ilustraciones oficiales conmemorativas favoritas.

After much thought and careful consideration, this was my decision: I want to create a hybrid set between the StarEmber design, the RingDoll, and 2 of my favorite commemorative illustrations official illustrations official.

Tener claro qué referencias vas a utilizar es apenas el comienzo del camino, a partir de aquí necesito reconocer cuantas y qué piezas componen la ropa que utiliza Xie Lian. El nombre de su atuendo lo conocí gracias a The Hanfu Story y sus constantes y virales clips que empezaron a aparecer en mi feed hace algún tiempo.

Having clear what references you are going to use is just the beginning of the way, from here I need to recognize how many and what pieces compose the clothes that Xie Lian wears. The name of her outfit I got to know thanks to The Hanfu Story and her constant and viral clips that started appearing in my feed some time ago.

Esta tienda con un gran catálogo de conjuntos "hanfu" es hermosa y bien organizada, pero ofrece poca o nula información sobre el nombre o composición de cada pieza de sus conjuntos temáticos, y aún menos información sobre los materiales.

This store with a large catalog of "hanfu" sets is beautiful and well organized, but offers little or no information on the name or composition of each piece in its themed sets, and even less information on materials.

Sin embargo, aquí aprendí que existe una ropa interior de dos piezas de naturaleza unisex llamada "Zhongyi", y que es muy parecido a la que utiliza Xie Lian en uno de los capítulos finales del "Paso de Banyue" (aunque mirando detenidamente, esta utilizando 2 piezas superiores, no 1 solamente, y una de ellas no tiene mangas).

However, here I learned that there is a two-piece undergarment of a unisex nature called "Zhongyi", and that it is very similar to the one worn by Xie Lian in one of the final chapters of "Banyue Passage" (although looking closely, he is wearing 2 upper pieces, not 1 only, and one of them is sleeveless).

Aja, allí tengo mi primera parte de este Cosplay. ¿Qué pasa con las demás?, éste blog de nombre super simpatico fue una auténtica revelación, Y EN ESPAÑOL. Aquí encontré que la falda de tablones que utiliza Xie Lian se llama "Qun o Chang", la pieza interior de cuello cruzado sobre la ropa interior, quizá sea el "Yi"...

Aha, there I have my first part of this Cosplay. What about the others, this super cute name blog was a real revelation, AND IN SPANISH. Here I found that the plank skirt that Xie Lian wears is called "Qun o Chang", the cross neck underpiece over the underwear, maybe it's the "Yi"...

Hasta esta etapa, tengo identificado la información necesaria para la ropa interior, su nombre y cantidad de piezas, ¡también el material guía para los patrones!, y las opciones para la tela puede ser algodón, seda o polyester.

Up to this stage, I have identified the information needed for the underwear, its name and number of pieces, also the guiding material for the patterns and the options for the fabric can be cotton, silk or polyester.

Todavía no tengo claro todos los detalles de la segunda y tercera capa de ropa superior, pero sí tengo la información necesaria para hacer "la falda plisada", cuyo diseño es super peculiar y ya la había visto anteriormente entre mi búsqueda de idea para otros proyectos. ¡También encontré un tutorial para hacer los pliegues con ayuda de papel y una plancha! (lo tengo guardado en Instagram), no es necesario que me preocupe por comprar una tela necesariamente plisada.

I'm still not clear on all the details of the second and third layers of upper garment, but I do have the information needed to make "the pleated skirt", whose design is super quirky and I had seen it before among my search for idea for other projects. I also found a tutorial for making the pleats with the help of paper and an iron! (I have it saved on Instagram), I don't need to worry about buying a necessarily pleated fabric.

Ahora, sinceramente en esta parte esperaba haber avanzado un poco mas rápido, pero con este proyecto estoy aprendiendo que por cada paso que doy, puedo retroceder al inicio fácilmente porque nuevas incógnitas me hacen replantear lo que creía que ya tenía concretado: Busqué videos de otras fans de TGCF para ver el "unboxing" de la RingDoll de Xie Lian, en busca de mas detalles del orden de colocación y cantidad de piezas del conjunto, acá comprobé las evidentes diferencias que tanto me gustan entre la versión del manhua, y la doll.

Now, honestly in this part I expected to have advanced a little faster, but with this project I am learning that for every step I take, I can easily go back to the beginning because new unknowns make me rethink what I thought I already had concreted: I looked for videos of other TGCF fans to see the "unboxing" of the RingDoll of Xie Lian, looking for more details of the order of placement and number of pieces of the set, here I checked the obvious differences that I like so much between the version of the manhua, and the doll.

Ver desplegadas las piezas de ropa de la doll me ayuda muchísimo para determinar la longitud de las mangas en proporción a mi cuerpo y en comparación a las demás piezas de su ropa. No todas tienen el mismo largo en las mangas y eso se nota muchísimo en todas sus versiones, pero es difícil determinar cuál es cuál y allí es cuando estos videos son de gran ayuda, he estado tomando capturas como loca todo el fin de semana.

Seeing the doll's clothing pieces displayed helps me a lot to determine the length of the sleeves in proportion to my body and in comparison to the other pieces of her clothing They don't all have the same length sleeves and that is very noticeable in all her versions, but it is difficult to determine which is which and that is when these videos are a great help, I have been taking pictures like crazy all weekend.

En la primera etapa de este nuevo proyecto cosplay, concluí que para este diseño híbrido elaboré un conjunto de 7 piezas principales (piezas de ropa grande, aquí no estoy contando los detalles como las vendas en cuello y brazos, el cinturón, las botas o el sombrero con su velo), de las que por ahora identifico como: El "Zhongyi" (ropa interior -2-), el "Qun o Chang" (la falda con tablones -1-), el "Yi" (la primera prenda de cuello cruzado -1-) y el "Shan" (la segunda pieza principal, que se utiliza sobre el "Yi" -1-). Todavía estoy en busca del nombre de 2 piezas, la última especialmente por su protagonismo al ser la pieza que "unificará" toda la ilusión de movimiento del traje.

In the first stage of this new cosplay project, I concluded that for this hybrid design I elaborated a set of 7 main pieces (large clothing pieces, here I am not counting the details such as the bandages on neck and arms, the belt, the boots or the hat with its veil), of which for now I identify as: The "Zhongyi " (underwear -2-), the "Qun or Chang " (the skirt with planks -1-), the "Yi" (the first cross-necked garment -1-) and the "Shan " (the second main piece, worn over the "Yi " -1-). I am still in search of the name of 2 pieces, the last one especially for its prominence as it is the piece that will "unify" the whole illusion of movement of the costume.

7 capas puede sonar a mucha tela y el riesgo potencial de la perdida de la silueta, pero creo que si trabajo unos 3 o 4 tipos diferentes de tela suave como el chiffon y telas suaves para cortinas (hack infalible!) lograre conservar la curva de la espalda y mis hombros, sin sacrificar el volumen del final del diseño (creo que lo mas impactante de los trajes "hanfus", y lo que hace que se vean tan mágicos, es ese efecto fin sin de tela moviéndose cuando caminas o mueves los brazos).

7 layers may sound like a lot of fabric and the potential risk of silhouette loss, but I find that if I work with 3 or 4 different types of soft fabrics like chiffon and soft drapery fabrics (foolproof hack!) I will manage to keep the curve of the back and my shoulders, without sacrificing the volume of the end of the design (I think the most striking thing about the "hanfus" suits, and what makes them look so magical, is that final effect of fabric moving when you walk or move your arms).

Reconozco por supuesto que necesito investigar muchísimo más, necesito ver mas referencias, y definitivamente necesito pulir mis primeros bocetos para poder seguir adelante y producir exitosamente los patrones definitivos. ¿Qué necesito mejorar?, ¡fíjate!, los trajes de este tipo de historias no son piezas de dos caras, las prendas mas largas que llegan a los tobillos están abiertas en varias secciones o tienen injertos de tela extra para un mayor efecto de ondas cuando los personajes tienen escenas de acción, especialmente en combate. La tela vuela por todos lados y su apariencia es absolutamente celestial.

I recognize of course that I need to do a lot more research, I need to see more references, and I definitely need to polish up my first sketches in order to go ahead and successfully produce the final patterns. What do I need to improve?, note, the costumes in these types of stories are not two-sided pieces, longer garments that reach the ankles are open in several sections or have extra fabric grafts for a greater ripple effect when the characters have action scenes, especially in combat. The fabric flies all over the place and looks absolutely heavenly.

Y creo que aquí por fin contacto con mi genuina intensión de recrear un Xie Lian que luzca como lo que es, un ser divino, celestial, que cuando camina o se mueve evoca sentimientos sutiles en quien lo mire. Un personaje que no encaja con el paisaje, pero a la vez quiere pasar desapercibido, con su blanco en perpetuo luto. Triste y hermoso.

And I think that here I finally contact with my genuine intention to recreate a Xie Lian that looks like what he is, a divine, celestial being, that when he walks or moves evokes subtle feelings in whoever looks at him. A character that does not fit in with the landscape, but at the same time wants to go unnoticed, with his white in perpetual mourning. Sad and beautiful.

Anoche reconsideré en cómo estaba estudiando este proyecto hasta ahora, sentí que no le estaba -otra vez- imprimiendo el amor que merece, pensé en borrar este post pero en lugar de eso, volví mi atención a la versión de Xie Lian del Live Action que aún no se emite, pero del que se consiguen algunas filtraciones de las filmaciones. Hice nuevos collages con imágenes nuevas coladas en Pinterest, y mi mamá me ayudó a imprimirlos esta mañana, y la verdad me siento mucho mejor porque la caída y volumen de esa versión se acerca mucho a lo que quiero, tener estas referencias en mis manos me inspira seguridad, a veces temo olvidar las cosas por mas que las anote... es difícil poner en una lista la totalidad de una visión.

Last night I reconsidered on how I was studying this project so far, I felt like I wasn't -again- giving it the love it deserves, I thought about deleting this post but instead, I turned my attention to Xie Lian's version of Live Action which is not yet aired, but of which you get some leaks of the footage. I made new collages with new images pinned on Pinterest, and my mom helped me print them out this morning, and I actually feel much better because the drop and volume of that version is so close to what I want, having these references in my hands inspires me with confidence, sometimes I'm afraid I'll forget things no matter how much I write them down... it is difficult to put in a list the totality of a vision.

¡Esos son los progresos hasta ahora! Actualmente llevo 3 incursiones sin éxito para encontrar las telas con hilo bordado o brocado correctas, sin embargo eso no me desanima porque este proyecto ha recibido mucho apoyo y comentarios positivos de mis amigos en la comunidad Cosplayer Venezolana desde que mencione que quería hacer a Xie Lian.

That's the progress so far! Currently I've made 3 unsuccessful forays to find the right embroidered or brocade thread fabrics, however that doesn't discourage me because this project has received a lot of support and positive comments from my friends in the Venezuelan Cosplayer community since I mentioned that I wanted to make Xie Lian.
