Words are powerful tools.

I think your article hits on the first part of this verse from the Bible:

Proverbs 12:18: "The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing."

The power of words has not been lost on me. My wife's first language is not English and her words have always been very sharp but as you mentioned sharp words can wound a child. Over the years I've shown her that she should choose her words carefully to build others up and not tear people down.

Have my sons made very poor choices at points in their life? Absolutely
Do those things require intervention? Absolutely
Should I berate them on those choices? No

Words are better when used to teach and correct. Words are better when they build rather than tear down. To encourage rather than discourage.

So in that light I have always tried to tame my tongue around my children.

Now about your article specifically? Well done but I might reconsider one part.

Success comes to those who don't quit

I agree that those who try, fail, and never get back up again are doomed to failure.

I will agree that those who persevere in the face of adversity are much more likely to succeed.

But sometimes the real trick isn't trying again... but learning and re-evaluating before deciding to try again.

  • Make mistakes and fail. It is part of life
  • Get up after every failure and keep moving. Perseverance counts
  • Learn from every mistake and sometimes just pivot to something else :)

At least that's my take on things. Thank you for presenting yours :)
