So, it looks like its almost time to turn in (that sun is getting ready to go) or get that shelter up. Maybe you at least have to get that fire going before it gets too dark. There's a nice little trick to tell "approximately" how much time you will have to get this done.
It's a very simple little trick. So you can use your hand as a kind of "clock" so to speak.
Step 1: Take your hand and run it horizontal with the horizon. Palm facing you.
Step 2: Move the top of your index finger level with the bottom of the sun.
Step 3: If need be add fingers from your other hand to the bottom of the hand you're using until they touch the horizon.
Now; each finger on your hand is "approximately" 15 minutes until the sun will touch the horizon. At this point you will know that it is time to move it or lose it (the sunlight that is). Now keep in mind; sizes of fingers vary and could be more or less time. I have sausage fingers so this is a factor for me. Someone with smaller fingers may only have say 12 minutes per finger. So remember this if you need to use this trick.
This a good way to get an idea of how much time you have before that beautiful sun takes a nap for the evening. If you are ever stuck out and you need to get a shelter up or a fire going, just throw a hand up to make sure you're not running out of time. Hope this little trick is useful. Keep that one in the box just in case. Honestly, I find myself doing this trick all of the time just because. Lol. Thank you!
