One of the major basic characteristics of humans is the fact that we are meant to socially interact with one another – we are social beings. That means to actually survive we need other people. However, there is a wedge the universe put to that. In my culture, they say, ‘Twenty children can not play for twenty years’. This does not only imply that they will grow up but also that people get dispersed in different ways be it education, occupations, marriage, etc. So, we continually should meet more new faces as we grow in life. But there are certain times when the universe (or by the virtue of our planning) brings us together once again after some time, such an event is called a Reunion.
The school is one of the various institutions that bring young ones together. That is why the majority of people especially the older ones still have friends who they met while in school. Even though I am still a young man, I have attended just a few mini-reunionS. ‘Mini’ is because they are not that kind of formal, it was just a few close classmates that were in attendance. For the purpose of this topic, I will talk about my first reunion.
My first happened in 2017 after we had graduated from secondary school. I think what made that happen was that majority of us were bored at home. Honestly, you know many, if not all, of us, have been in school on and on since two or three years of age. From elementary school to primary school, to secondary school for about 13-15 years at a stretch. No breaks. We never knew a time would come we could have to wait for months, perhaps years before we get into the next phase of our education.
Then, not many had access to our own phones, so we exchange our parents’ numbers. It was one of the popular guys that brought up the idea of the reunion of just some set of guys. We got some plans and to meet at the house of one of us whom we usually go to when we were still in school. The day finally came and I set out. The funny thing was that to get to the location, I had to pass beside my former school to get there. I was not the outspoken type then so I had to walk briskly past there to avoid any recognition of any sort.
Upon getting there, most were around already. Man, I was happy to see my guys after just weeks of not seeing one another. Some were already thrashing out each other on the video game – PS3. Well, as one who didn’t know how to play it, I resorted to gisting with those who were not playing. It was here we recounted some of the funny moments we had in school.
I could remember someone mentioned when we went to play football after school on a Friday. We had just finished and some guys went to a nearby lake to swim. I only stood afar watching to swimmers. Then, a man came out of the blues and shouted “Away, away from there”. Honestly, we didn’t understand, we all looked at the man with no clue. Not until he brought out a whip and flogged the nearest person to him, that was when we spoke to our legs. During the interaction, he had gotten a hold of one of us and he wouldn’t let go. We had to start begging and made a promise that we won’t visit the lake anymore. The guy that was caught felt embarrassed when we recounted that experience.
After the whole gist, we watched some movies which I don’t even remember the titles but I was sure it would be one action movie. We got some snacks as refreshments and even when there was a power outage, we played football in the compound till everyone was tired. Oh, it was a real deal we had missed. But I was sure we enjoyed every bit of it till we all had to go home because it was already evening.
