My brother-in-law owns a pretty big farm. He uses about five plots of land solely for agricultural purposes, and he seems to know every little trick there is to growing plants.
One time, he sent us some scotch bonnets from his farm, and honestly, it was the tastiest pepper I had ever eaten. There was something about the freshness of it that made the ones we usually buy from the market feel completely different.
Last month, he invited me to visit his farm, but considering the distance and my schedule, I haven’t been able to make the trip yet. It’s definitely on my list of places to visit before the year ends, though.
He also told me he has a peanut farm too and that the peanuts would soon be ready for harvest. I love peanuts so much, and fresh ones have a completely different taste from the boiled or fried ones. There’s just something about eating them fresh. Although, I’ve also learned that you shouldn’t go overboard with them.
So, naturally, I asked if he could keep some for me since my sister would be visiting us soon, she could bring some along. Unfortunately, he said everything had already been ordered and was going into sacks for their respective owners. And that was when I started thinking about how much money there actually is in farming, especially commercial farming.
Peanuts, for instance, are a major commodity around here. Lots of people consume them regularly, which means farmers who can cultivate them on a large scale have a huge market waiting for them.
Of course, farming isn’t as simple as planting something and waiting for harvest day. There’s the constant maintenance, the weather, the pests and diseases, and everything else that can go wrong between planting and harvesting. Peanuts, in particular, can be quite vulnerable to pests, so keeping them healthy requires knowledge and consistency.
Thankfully, my brother-in-law seems to know his way around these things. He’s really good with plants, and I genuinely enjoy listening to him talk about them. There’s something fascinating about watching someone speak so passionately about what they do, especially when you can tell they’ve learned their craft through years of actually doing it.
Now, I just need to finally visit this farm and see all these plants I’ve heard so much about. And, of course, hopefully get my hands on some fresh peanuts.
