I'm a fan of the Fear Street Trilogy, and I have watched it a couple of times, once alone and the next time with my cousins. Though it was your typical slasher movie, I like the transition from one particular year to another... and the thought that everything was connected made it even better.
I didn't open classes today because our main internet connection is having a problem, and my backup isn't very reliable. So, using my phone, I tethered my data connection to our TV and watched the newest addition to Fear Street on Netflix. It's called "Fear Street: Prom Queen".
For starters, the movie isn't really related to the characters from the trilogy, although the setting is the same. People can watch it even though they haven't watched the trilogy, but it would be nice to at least know the background of the place, especially the relationship between Shadyside and Sunnyvale.
The trilogy's settings happened in 1994, 1978 and 1666 respectively, but for this movie it's set in 1988. So, it was before the mystery of these towns was solved. Anyway, let me tell you a bit about Fear Street: Prom Queen.
It's time for the Senior Prom in Shadyside High School, and of course, the main event would be picking the Prom Queen. There were six candidates, but it's mostly a rivalry between Lori Granger and Tiffany Falconer.
Tiffany is your typical mean girl who has bullied Lori her whole life. It was alleged that Lori's mom murdered her dad by slashing his face. Her parents fell victim to the "Shadyside" mystery and stuff. However, Lori wanted to prove that she could be different, and so she decided to join the selection to be the prom queen.
However, the usual Shadyside mystery and killings happened again a couple of days before the prom night, targeting the prom queen candidates. Who will survive, and who's the killer this time around?
To be honest, it's your typical slasher movie involving high school students. There's school rivalry, pretty prom dresses, and of course, blood splattering everywhere. I watch slasher films for the fun of it. It's oddly satisfying to watch unlikable characters being taken out, and I enjoy the frustration when the characters make the classic horror movie mistakes.
I find watching characters make questionable decisions frustrating and funny at the same time. I don't really expect any huge or deep plot from slasher films, but the entertainment they give.
I still prefer the second movie from the trilogy, though. I'm a fan of Sadie Sink, so I may be biased. But I really love her acting, and she gave the second movie more spice. In addition, the setting for this movie (summer camp - in the woods) is so much better than Prom Queen, which mainly happened in school.
I guess it's just the vibes we get when we see slasher films set outdoors rather than indoors that makes it better.

The ending could have been better! I mean, I had already expected the plot twist at the end, but instead of just Lori doing everything by herself, it would have been better if her mother also got involved. I mean, the Falconers effed up their family's life, so it would have been a mother-daughter sweet revenge. It would've added more drama to it if Lori's mom suddenly entered the scene and did what was done to her family. XD
Fear Street loves messy revenges and curses through generations, so it would have been a better fit. Oh well... I can just imagine my own ending. hahaha
Before I end my blabbering about this movie, let me just say one more thing. I LOVE YOU, MEGAN!!!
Lori's bestie is just the best! I love her character so much. She's crazy, weird, and the best friend everyone needs in their life. She deserves the world! haha
You'll get what I mean if you watch the movie. The movie is just an hour and a half long. If you love the Fear Street trilogy, you might not like this that much, but it's still an OK-ish watch.
I'm a horror fan, so I watch slasher films for the odd satisfaction of watching annoying characters experience their karmic justice in the most bloodily ridiculous ways. Well, slasher films are made for the purpose, I suppose. XD It's all in good fun! :)
It wasn't the best, but it was still a good watch. I'll leave the trailer here, so it's up to you whether to watch it or not. :)
