I woke up this afternoon to the news of the passing of the legendary Nigerian actor, Taiwo Hassan. This news hit harder because we grew up watching him and even having him as a role model because of the roles he played. The news of his health had just gotten public a week ago but no one expected this sad news, this soon.
This event got me reflecting about my close experiences with death and the most recent being an accident I had in a car back in 2023. I was just travelling to visit my family as I was about to relocate and so had to travel withy uncle and family friend who was the driver.
The accident claimed the life of the driver and caused live changing injuries and conditions to the other passengers, except me. Some people regard my survival if the crash as a miracle, but sometimes I often think what would my current situation be if the car had crashed a bit more, If i remained in the front passenger seat and not changed to the seat behind or if other circumstances had caused some injuries to me or even death. One thing stood out to me in all these thoughts, I wasn’t special or different from others.
I was just lucky and should be grateful for that. I was unconcious due to the impact or shock and had a little scar on my head, but it was nothing compared to those of the others that required surgeries and lots of medication.
Life is indeed fragile, and we are just one sleep, one wrong heart beat, one disease, fall or event away from its end. While some are lucky to live life till old age and perhaps didn’t have to think too much about death till it came, I have been thinking about death more lately as it is the only thing that’s guaranteed in all of these pursuit.
I’m taking life easy as it comes, enjoying every moment, amending and building relationships and being at peace with myself, because at the end of it all, nothing matters more than the life that was lived, and I would want to be happy that I lived life to the best of my ability.
