Well Hello There Technicians And Hivers
Confidence is something hard gained.
Okay this might not be the case for everyone, but it surely is the case for me. However it might be hard gained for me but once I have it I use it to my fullest. Ain't no shred of doubt left what so ever.
Why would I rant on about this? Well I'll tell you. It's something silly I suppose always tend to be a silly thing.
One could say that I am fairly new in my trade, I'm still young and have a lot of knowledge that I still need to gain to even start considering the fact that I know what I am doing.
Okay so let me get to it. We do a lot of clutches on the Volkswagen DSG Transmissions well atleast one every other week. I've shared around three occasions where I was semi in charge of refitting one and chimming one to the correct specs. However I always had a helping hand that guided me.
"This was not the case for me today."
Upon arriving at work today I saw two fresh and good looking dual clutches waiting all neatly packed up in the office (they were ofcourse ordered to be fitted into cars waiting on the workshop floor)
I said "Bossman today is the day. I want to fit one of those by my lonesome."
He gave a grinning smile and said "Well there ya go"
And there I went
Burnt Blue Like Marble
When the metal of any engine or motor components has this marble blue effect to it, well then you know it got heat up so warm it tempered. This means you can "chuck it in the fud bucket."
Marble I say? Yeah check it out
I have to say, even though it's completely burned up I do admire the way it looks. Meh perhaps it's just me?
In all honesty, in my short three years working with transmissions, clutches and drive trains. I've never quite seen anything that burnt this bad and happened to be in one piece. I've seen worse yes, but what was left was all mushed up and mangled up.
Even the cir-clip holding the dampening plate in place was tempered blueish
Lets See What Awaits Us
Getting the handy clutch puller ready to use, thank God we have this tool. It really makes the removal of this job a lot easier. Some may have seen this one before.

The Release Bearings
Both of them seem to be quite buggered up the K-2 release bearing seems to be pressed out hard. I wonder what would have caused that, I mean it's an automatically shifted transmission and it doesn't have any other faults other than the clutch being burned. Kind of odd.
The K-1 release bearing (the bigger one) seemed to have a lot of clutch dust combined with some grimy residue. Also really odd in my opinion seeing that this transmission doesn't have any leaks and is in quite a good condition if you ask me.
I think the clutch has been refitted some time ago and it might have been done improperly and gave some premature failure. I over heard the customer stating something about two months ago or something of the sorts. (Whether he was referring to the clutch I do not know.)
The Old VS The New

The only thing being that I didn't turn the old clutch the right way around 🤣 Sorry guys I was in fast paced mode and didn't notice my errors here! However it still gives a good representation, doesn't it?
Lets fit her and see what I can do!
I first had to clean up nicely around the mainshaft seal. There's probably no huge need in doing that, but I like to give a quality service and seeing that we did remove the release bearings it would be frowned upon if I don't. However I do it with a smile, twice everyday!
Chimming Chims Chimmings
Laughs yeah I should probably stop joking around. I worked a little late today and whenever I am even a little tired I sort of go crazy. Pardon me.
With every clutch you get a bag full of chims, well two bags actually. They don't give as much chims as they always use to but we can work with this.
K-1 + 0.2
K-2 + 0.2
This is another odd thing for the day. With all the clutches I've done and all the clutches Bossman have done, neither of us have ever seen a plus 0.2 on both clutches.
A first for everything hey.
We have this little thing we do with the chims where we roughly calculate with what thickness we will be starting. It's only a rough estimate though.
Well we started with.
K-1 with a 2.95 mm and ended up with a 3.25 mm thickness chim.
K-2 with a 2.1 mm and ended up with a 2.75 mm thickness chim.
Both ended up have the sweet spot clearance at 0.40 mm
She's all tucked in nicely where she belongs, only needs a cir-clip and the dampening plate and she's ready to be re-fitted!
This Was A Out And A In
The client wanted no time wasted, even though he was going to push an insurance claim. He said "Well if they don't pay I suppose I'll have to pay anyways, might as well get it done with"
Without a little doubt this was the fastest job we have had in our workshop in what? The last year? Same day in, same day out? I know this sounds somewhat bad but yeah we handle a lot of insurance works and we rarely only need to fix a clutch on these cars that show up at our door step.
They are usually driven into the earth before brought in for repairs. However this client no, he maintains his and cares for his. Period!
I had to snap this! I know a lot or well most cars today are released with these damn beautiful clusters! Basically a whole screen infront of you, and I gotta say it looks real neat folks! Real neat.
No doubt I finished her up quickly, not a lot of work and more so it was a easy job. Well maintained cars are usually very easy to work on. No stripped bolts, no broken components that you somehow need to fix without charging extra. None of those, just simply amazing working on these!
