Adomas Valantinas utilized data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) to identify spots appearing randomly all over the vast dark patches on the Moon's nearside. Valantinas is currently a graduate student at the University of Bern. He made the discovery while leading research at Brown University as a visiting scholar.

The researchers say the freshly exposed boulders are a sign that the moon's tectonic surface has been in motion recently.
