There are three Bridges crossing the Acushnet River between New Bedford and Fairhaven, but for this post I am focusing on only one of them A swing truss Bridge.
I have been driving up to this bridge and caught by the lights changing and the barriers come down, and if your in a rush to get somewhere it must be such a pain I am sure, but then again those that have lived here for a while probably know the timings the bridge opens and avoid it at those times.
But the first time I got caught on it and saw the bridge opening for the boats to pass up and down the river, I thought I had to go and get shots of it one day, and recently I did.
lets start with a view looking across the bridge.

This bridge is often thought of including three spans that cross over from New Bedford to Fish Island, a second span which is officially the bridge and swing truss crosses over to Popes Island and a third Span which crosses to Fairhaven.
as this shot shows it is possible to walk over the bridge which I did a few times the morning I took these shots, I did wonder if they monitored for foot traffic before opening the bridge, I guess they do, but I was well off the bridge each time I saw it open

As I said the Middle span is the actually Bridge and it was built between 1897 and 1899 and includes a 283.2 foot long swing truss
