I may have put myself in a financial hole, but I recently bought a mandolin! Playing it is way more fun than paying taxes early:)
It's a Seagull S8, and I absolutely love it.
I've been playing the guitar for 20 years, and I've never really played melody lines on it. I've always been a rhythm guitar player, playing chords to sing along with.
I honestly don't even like the way chords sound on a mandolin, so I have been playing melodies exclusively on it. This is great fun.
Now I can pretend to be The Harlequin from the Deviant Moon Oracle
lol
I spend a lot of time alone...
Here is some of my practice.
I seriously play all the time, and I never seem to get any better:(
This is actually OK with me, since the mandolin will still allow me to find new melodies and songs I never would have found with my guitar.
It continues to ring long after I have hit the string. It makes some crazy harmonics, but I need a really good microphone to pick them up. I have one, but I didn't use it on this video.
I am learning some Irish Jigs, and that is fun, but I have to play them really slowly. Someday I suppose I will be able to play them at normal speed.
I hope the mandolin will act as a songwriting muse. I haven't written a full song in close to 2 years!
