The red light on
Flashing smiles and dashing clothes,
Loosened lips and spilled drinks.
Slanted the floor and slippery the slope,
Dressed to kill to fall 6 feet down.
Do you ever feel like you are doing the right thing, but for one reason or another things just don't pan out as expected, the pieces don't fall into place or perhaps, the pendulum of luck swing in the other direction at the most inopportune time? Life. But, it is about process and consistency, big step or small, moving forward into the dark or into the light, but always forward. Sometimes there is someone holding a hand along the way, sometimes the journey must be taken alone, but always forward.
When it comes to the future, I am optimistic that it is going to be okay, as there is really no other way to be, as to assume that it won't means that there is little reason to push for different. Do you ever think about where you actually want to be in the future, not just what you want to have?
I think part of the reason we focus on material things so often, is because it is far easier for our imagination to build and grasp a thing, whereas building ourselves into that picture, our thoughts and how we are going to feel about it all, becomes a blur, there is uncertainty. We know what we think we want when we look forward, but that is always based on what we know, like children dreaming of growing up so they can spend all of their earnings on their favorite toys.
When we look forward, we are immature, we don't know what we will know when we reach the point we are looking forward to and then when we look back - we have a little more information, we are a little wiser. It is a cycle of filling our thoughts and emptying them as we fulfill them in action, only to refill the bucket with a hole in it, again and again.
Is it a process of constant dissatisfaction that drives us forward looking for an end to the wanting, or do we take satisfaction in the chase, like flirting with a beautiful stranger at a bar, not knowing where the night will take us and what the morning will bring? While we are risk averse and fear the loss, the danger of the uncertainty excites us. Destined to continually seek security and upturning the apple cart once stable - as we discover that the thing that we wanted, was not what we wanted at all - the object of our desires bores us.
From paved streets to beaten track,
Leave behind what we wanted to hold.
Let the breeze take the map away,
and slip into the glowing red light.
