I splurged a little today with the blessing of my wife - it is rare to get a free pass. It wasn't much of a splurge, but with pretty much every dollar we bring in earmarked for renovation on a very tight budget, the unnecessary gets pushed well down the list.
One of the things we don't have in the house and haven't had for a very long time is a speaker and while picking up our bathroom cupboards, we also grabbed a WiFi speaker from IKEA, one of the Sonos collaboration ones. It is definitely not the greatest speaker on the market, but for 99€ it will do the job for our tastes and is a pretty clean looking unit that can sit on a table and still be unobtrusive.
Some people put a lot of money into speakers these days and entertainment systems in general, but I am definitely one of those "good enough is good enough" kinds of people in this area and don't care that much about the minute variations. I have a friend that spent 350,000€ on the speakeras alone for his 8-seat theater - and I am pretty sure if he has spent a 10th of that, I wouldn't have heard the difference. Maybe he did, or maybe after spending that much, he thought he did.
The more we spend on something, the more it seems to influence our opinion on its quality and the more important the variations become. I am not well-off enough to spend money on what my ears wouldn't likely even perceive as different, nor do I really care about such things if they don't have a significant effect on my experience.
It is the same with food, "good enough is good enough" and I care very little about fancy restaurants or what top chefs consider good food, I am more down to earth in this regard and nothing adds flavor to food like a good atmosphere and great company. Even terrible food tastes well enough with the right people.
And music is the same - I love to dance with my wife, I love to hear my daughter sing, I love watching them dance together to whatever music happens to be on. It used to be that my family was surrounded by music, but for a long time it has absent - kind of like life got in the way of the tune and muffled the voice of the singers.
So today, I changed that and while nothing to brag about to audiophiles, the sound is decent enough, the volume high enough, the connection strong enough. And when I finally set it up and played some music in the background as my daughter and I played a game, I loved seeing her head move along to the beat and her dance unconsciously whenever on her feet.
I think this is why good enough is good enough for me, as it doesn't matter much about the quality of the speaker or the food - as it is background noise that supports the things that are important to us, our experiences with the people we want to share our precious moments with.
Music, like food, is best experienced together.
