Numbers up
Rolled the dice many times in life,
and had it tumble through the cracks.
Lost in time and space and to pride,
weighted to the side that wasn't mine.
When young I knew the world would wait
for me to take my time and claim what's for me.
As I grew I learned, that none would hold
for they grew more impatient by the day.
An oyster it promised, as swine chewed through
to the core of what was more and less
Whittled away through day and into night
until all was gone and all was left.
Confidence stepped into the light
where before, only the meek had strayed
Confidently yes and devoid of the skill
The will but not the ability to play.
When all is known there is left to know
except what one knew, is nothing at all
And while the counting of everything held,
the numbers balanced back to naught.
Accounted for and tallied across
a lifetime of loss and reward,
At the end of the day when all was said
was by what done a difference made.
