“Invention is rarely a moment or a flash of brilliance or a Eureka moment. Often, it’s more about failure than success and yet, young people today often only see the success and not what went on before it.” James dyson
Other than owning a Dyson vacuum, I don't know that much about the company, nor the history of the founder and owner, James Dyson, but reading an article about his process to build the first vacuum, has helped me respect his process. It took 4 years and 5127 prototypes to get it the way he wanted, with the first built with cardboard and tape and built in the back shed. He is now Britain's second wealthiest man - not bad for a sucker.
“I have spent my life wishing more young people did engineering rather than going to media studies. Instead of talking about problems, I want young people to solve them." James Dyson
He seems to have a pretty good grip on the state of the world at the moment in terms of what many young people "aspire" to, which is workless wealth - commentators on life, rather than creators of living. At least, that is what I see a lot of in the youth, not that it is all bad, as they will ape into crypto in the hope for wealth beyond their wildest dreams - with most failing, much like they do on Instagram and the other platforms.
But eventually, I hope they will find their way.
Speaking of finding ways - a thought returned to my mind today of a post I have been meaning to write or have written in the past, but will reiterate here in terms of one of the things I love about Hive. It inspires us and encourages us to explore and nurture our talents.
While this might not be the case for everyone, on here, I feel that many I have watched over the years have seemingly increased their drive to improve their daily experience in some way. Sure, many came for the reward and stay for the reward, but even they generally develop themselves over time to improve their skills in some area and often, it is an area that they are not professionals and may not have considered getting paid for it earlier.
Using myself as an example - I am not a writer, a photographer, a poet, a philosopher, an IT expert or an economist or trader - yet, here I am daily, dabbling in all of these things and more. Many people want to consume the words of experts, but when it comes to living a life, the fact is that most of the time we spend, isn't in our own expertise, it is wandering half-lost through daily activities. Some of these we do better than others, some of them we despise and are miserable at, but we do them anyway.
However, Hive gives us a brilliant opportunity to take what we enjoy, the hobbies we love, our hidden skills and guilty pleasures - and indulge by spending time in them.
For example, one of my good friends the other day asked after seeing some pictures of our latest renovations, "Have you ever thought about decorating and design professionally?"
Yes.
Actually, when I was young I used to design and sew dresses and at eighteen, even won a local fashion show with four evening gowns. Yeah - I don't do any of that anymore, but I enjoyed it a lot. However, it wasn't really my love, even though I was okay at it. What I did like however, was observing people, predicting decisions, uncovering patterns and relationships and understanding the dynamics of complex systems at play.
However, I studied business at university instead.
Why? Because it was easy, broad, non-committal and had the promise of "I can go into anything". But, because of this, it is also largely useless. It is like media studies - without additional experience, it doesn't solve any problems other than, providing a salary.
But here on Hive - I don't have to talk about the details of my profession and I am not tied to the piece of paper of my degree, I am free to roam and discover what else I could be, when I am not doing what I get paid to be. It doesn't matter if income flow happens or not (at least at first), because the exploration is a form of entertainment. No one sits down at the TV to watch their favorite show or team play, expecting at the end, to have a few dollars put into their account - even though it consumes their time, attention and carries a steep opportunity cost because of it.
Hive has an opportunity cost of course too, but it provides the opportunity to delve into ourselves and interact with others, and potentially offsets the cost by also offering the chance of reward. This means we have the chance to be paid to learn and as I keep saying, the more we learn, the more we earn. It might not always be directly on what we learn or a return directly on what we produce, but as we increase our skills and knowledge, we have improved potential to generate income on the side - all while doing things we love at the core.
For example, I always wanted to try writing and publishing something, but - never found the time. In the last 5 years on Hive, I have written the equivalent of something like 60x 300-page novels - just in posts. Sure, they aren't novels, but they are articles and 4700+ of them at the length I write, add up.
I found the time.
And I found the time before I was earning anything on them and once I started earning a little, I continued finding more time to keep going. But, I had to keep learning too, as I started to explore wider-ranging content, other skills and increasing my knowledge about this blockchain and various parts of the greater industry and economics in general. But, I didn't go onto Wikipedia and Google to come back and spin articles, I learned by doing. My preferred method of learning by far.
Now, I am not going to invent a vacuum cleaner and become a billionaire, but this doesn't mean that what I and many others here are doing, isn't problem solving. We are doing what James Dyson has spent his life wishing for - young people solving problems.
We might not solve them as individuals, but through participation on Hive in an attempt to earn, many people are developing skills that they can translate into their every day world to improve their lives. On top of this, they will not be going in conditioned as a consumer, they will have the understanding of a creator, an investor, an owner and a person who can have better than average skills at interacting with many of the economic dynamics that are hidden to most people.
Spend time on Hive, and see opportunity everywhere.
This place is an education in things that education systems, systematically exclude in the curriculum. It is a world of learning that not only gives the information, but allows participants to interact directly and affect the outcomes. It encourages attempts, incentivizes higher standards and rewards accomplishments in so many ways. It is an improve-of-brain community, filled with diverse people, pathways and potentials, for anyone who dares to take up the challenge.
“I am also someone who is prepared to slog through prototype after prototype searching for the breakthrough. If a slow starter like me could succeed, surely this might encourage others.” James Dyson
Hive encourages, inspires and rewards - all in the one place.
