Today had a cute surprise, as I found this cute little bunny hiding near our door, but it seemed to have a bit of an issue getting its hop on.
Mummy bunnies usually feed their baby bunnies in the morning before sunrise and leave them hidden away for the day, but not in places like this. I am nit sure if it has been abandoned or hopped a little too far from safety, but I wasn't keen on having it become the dinner of a passing crow. So took it inside in a box while I worked out where to take it.
Bunnies are common around here, so I a not sure how much anyone cares, but still - it is a defenseless little animal. And it helps it is super cute.
After a couple calls, we found an animal shelter point at a vet just around the corner, so it only took a a few minutes out of my day to run it over there and get it checked out. I have no idea what they do with them last that, but I think they get some government support for helping animals brought in by the public.
I know I wasn't meant to hold it if we were going to release it back into the yard, but since we weren't, I did. It was a bit scared in the box, but when I held it in my palm it calmed down and started to sleep.
It reminded me of our dog that we lost just before Christmas and I had the "can we keep it" feeling in my head.
But no.
Back into the box and off to the vet for a checkup and whatever they do. I had a feeling that they wouldn't care and as soon as we left they would euthanize it or something, but after we explained what we knew and turned for the door, we heard the vet walking away talking in a baby voice to it, so that is hopeful.
Obviously there are more important things in life going on than rescuing baby bunnies, but I think it is important to do these kinds of things if the moment arises. I don't now if it helps the bunny, but it does help me feel like I have made a difference for the better in somethings life, true or not.
The next weeks are going to unfortunately be very busy and likely stressful, so now at least I have a happy bunny place fresh in my memory to turn to and remind me to stay calm.
It really was very cute.
