Forgotten places and faces

When traveling, I generally take a camera with me as even though I know I won't have much time for myself, I try to see a little of the place I am in so I have a memory to carry back with me other than taxis, planes and client offices.

This year was meant to be quite travel heavy, but I haven't been out of the country or even the city since the start of the year. It is strange. I have never been a frequent flier before but I was a flight or two away from getting silver membership, before the travel bans. I don't know what that would get me and I will likely never know.

I use Abobe Lightroom mobile for basic edits and while putting my daughter to sleep, I was scrolling through some of the photos. There are quite a lot there from the time I got my phone, but I picked a few of my favourite images taken while on the road and tweaked them slightly.

I dont always have time to edit, so sometimes all I do is crop or straighten as needed. It seems one leg is shorter than the other and I take a lot of my images on a lean. Images often look better when there are some structural lines in them to offer the eyes support.

This one is of a busker playing in the old town of Dusseldorf in Germany. He was good too and I dropped him a note instead of coins. I like the feel of the shot with the sliver of action standing out from the unknown depths.

This has the same idea to it, with a slice of traffic as seen from the back of a taxi in Belgrade. I was on my way to spend an evening at dinner with clients for what was one of the most pleasant work nights I have had. They were lovely and made me feel far more comfortable than I had anticipated.

This is a shot from on a plane and to me it feels like an airline magazine advert. I subdued some of the blue colours so the skin tones can take focus. I think what makes the shot feel calm is the mass of white space flowing through the window to give a "heavenly" feel to it. I actually took this one with my phone on a 5x optical zoom and the quality surprised me.

And here, early morning in Amsterdam as I walked in the hope to capture something great, but didn't quite make it. I really like this shot though as there is a story to it and the cool tones of the walls and the warmth of the lights inside add atmosphere. I am glad that the guy standing outside chose to stand in the centre of the doorway.

And lastly, another shot from Dusseldorf which I like because of the atmosphere of it with a little space and layers of action, the traditional and the ferris wheel. There was a trade fair in town and the streets were absolutely full and it seemed like the attendees partied pretty hard. I don't have that luxury whilst working, but I do get to enjoy a glass of wine or two and sometimes a decent meal. It can be pretty lonely though.

I like looking back at travel photos, but there is a difference with the work ones as I don't have the same connection with the locations. Travelling has been a shared experience for me and the memories made during work trips don't seem to stick as well, with the locations not as firmly planted in my mind and a little bit of blur to know where was where and which trip which. It is definitely not my preferred way to travel, but I do enjoy what I can of and that definitely includes taking the photos.
