Different perspectives of the same thing are vitally important and I see that in the future, this is the way that a lot of the information we receive will be. That sounds a lot like now but, the difference would be that private citizens will be the ones reporting, taking pictures and giving their views of the same events and that will be compared to that of official sources on the fly also.
In time, the blockchains can stamp and verify the sources and make it all open for discovery. There will be different perspectives, views and opinions of course but the picture will be much more complete and with decentralized, unrelated sources, much harder to fake.
Even now the social/local source reports can verify greatly from the official reports which throws into question the entire story. Is this by design? I would say that this is engineered to throw all information under the same bus so it is up to the audience to pick and choose what is believable and the audience is notoriously bad at being objective with information that supports or, information that conflicts with their views.
Once we are all sources of open information when it comes to the events that affect our personal lives but without the social proof of herd mentality, our views might average to be a relatively clear look at an event. News becomes consensus driven without people ever having to be in contact with each other. An AI might be able to handle the data from all the various sources and match up all of the points that overlap to build a rounded picture.
I wonder what the world looks like if instead of people watching centralized news services, their information is served via a decentralized, verifiable and traceable set of sources localised to each event. Will it still be as sensational? Will we still be glued to media outlets to get the latest information? Will it be more or less practical? Will the world seem as such a scary place? Take away the incentive of advertising revenue and associated network rivalry to sensationalize news reports for viewer numbers and the news goes back to being useful.
My belief is that when it comes down to it, we all essentially want the same things from life. A chance to work at something we enjoy and the possibility to grow while doing it as well as safe places for our kids to discover their own bests. Watch the news though and suddenly the world is full of fear and cruelty.
Just some quick thoughts.
