I was halfway through a much, much heavier piece than this and then thought, no, this can wait. Normally I don't do that and will write out my thoughts from start to finish, but tonight I just wanted to write something that was lighter, more personal, and just well, not something that is critical of the world in some way. I spend a lot of time on the current state of it all and while I am far from impressed, it does weigh heavy on me to focus attention there. Sometimes, it is good to have a breather, catch the wind back, and cleanse the palate.
Palate: a person's ability to distinguish between and appreciate different flavours.
Palette: a thin board or slab on which an artist lays and mixes colours.
Pallet: a portable platform for handling, storing, or moving materials and packages
Moving on.
A funny thing happened today, as my daughter made a friend with the next door neighbour child, who is two years younger but the same height as Smallsteps. She came into the house for the first time and firstly asked "why is your house so ridiculous?" which was probably more a decorating style thing as the colour palette of our home is quite white and neutral. The second question was "Why does your dad look like that?"Like what? "So brown!"
I don't think Smallsteps has really had to answer those kinds of questions before, but she just said that, he is from Australia, nearly everyone looks like that there. Which in her experience of having talked mostly to my family, is true.
They had fun playing together.
And now the holiday for Smallsteps begins for real, as tomorrow my wife will go to work while we play around the house and maybe take a trip to the city by tram. With the new school starting, she is going to have to learn how to travel alone there, so we are going to practice several times until she is comfortable. Plus, her cousins live in the city and we are going to shuttle them backwards and forwards through the summer to spend time together.
A summer of adventure.
And, I was thinking that since I have a museum pass, Smallsteps and I can visit the various museums together and spend time really going through and seeing what is on offer. Normally, we are on more of a schedule and when my wife is there, it is harder to keep Smallsteps' attention. With me though, we can have a ball talking along the way. I think she would appreciate the displays more when she has some time to think about them.
She loves anything with animals.
But that is not on the cards for tomorrow, because on Mondays, all the museums are closed in Finland apparently. So, we can do it later in the week, or next week, or the week after... We have time. And of course, we have plenty of things to do around the house. Well, I do. The garden needs constant vigilance and I have many, many projects that need doing soon.
Next on the cards:
I have immensely enjoying getting my hands dirty of late.
And see? I don't think there was anything too heavy in here tonight and I think it was just what the doctor ordered for my mind to get a little space for a bit, and get the coming week started with a little family reflection. It is effective to plan the week ahead, but in my experience, don't get too attached to the plans, because things will likely change anyway.
