Well, I think that has got to be one of the best days of the summer - and the summer has yet to start. We went over to the neighbors for an afternoon of barbecuing and spent quite a few hours just chilling out, grilling and shooting the breeze - while the kids played. I don't think food gets any better than grilled out in the sunshine with friends.
Today it was quite apparent how much @smallsteps has matured over the last few months and she is getting much more adventurous. She even spent over an hour playing "out of sight" in the park next door, while always actually in sight. We try to introduce responsibility and independence when we can and so far, she keeps lengthening the rope.
Even my wife had a chance to chill out a bit and grab a glass of wine, something that she very rarely does.
The garden that we are in is really well cared for and while far from "perfect", it is the kind of garden that feels homely and comfortable, where a person can relax and forget about the outside world. It is the kind of feel I would like our garden to have here, where even though the sounds of the world filter in, they do not take focus and are barely noticed.
My daughter also showed her competitive streak today, something we have rarely seen before. She put herself into a hanging contest with one of the other kids and was pretty chuffed that she won. She is normally more standoffish in these kinds of situations, but today she seemed more relaxed than usual.
She also loves the grilled food as she gets to eat the same as everyone else, at least in appearance. She has always had a great appetite, especially for a kid with food allergies, but I don't think I have ever seen her eat as much as she did today. Grilled chicken, sausage, corn and zucchini - the cave girl diet. She also tried rhubarb (in a drink) for the first time and I hope it suits, as we have a heap of it in the garden.
They have a glass house similar to the one we will build out of the old windows when we change them in a month or two. It is only about 10m2, but that is enough to grow a few extras that need to be protected from the elements.
Oh, and the food was great and there was plenty of it. We didn't make it through most of what we cooked, but since the weather is so nice and the sun won't set until around 11 pm, they will do a second round.
Well, I will end this here as my wife has returned (someone has to stay home with our daughter when she sleeps) and I will head on over for an evening cider with the guys. I thought I would have more time to write, but the editing of the photos took a little longer than I expected.
I will try not to drink and blockchain later though...
Have a great evening.
