My eating habits have changed significantly since coming to China. Since I cannot cook regularly—getting the chance to do so at most once or twice a week, or sometimes not even that—I constantly crave food from back home. Unfortunately, there are no Bangladeshi restaurants in Wuiro, the area where I live; there are only two Pakistani restaurants. I often feel quite relaxed when visiting them because many of their dishes share similarities with Bengali cuisine. Consequently, these Pakistani restaurants are the only places where I can get a taste of home-style food.

However, a downside is that Wuiro is located far from Beijing's city center, so the buffet options commonly found in the city aren't available here. Prices for individual dishes at foreign restaurants tend to be quite high, whereas buffets don't have that limitation—they allow you to sample a wide variety of foods at a reasonable price. The distance to the city center remains a major obstacle to enjoying a buffet. Nevertheless, my Pakistani colleagues and I have made the trip a few times. Recently, a second branch of a familiar Pakistani restaurant called 'Habibi'—named 'Habibi 2.0'—opened up. It is located right next to the Liudaokou subway station in Beijing's Haidian district; you can spot it immediately upon exiting through the A1 subway gate.

Not long ago, my colleagues and I enjoyed a buffet there and learned that, to mark the opening of their new branch, they were organizing a daily lucky coupon draw in their WeChat group. We joined the group, and within just two weeks—on a Sunday—I was selected as a lucky winner. To determine the winner, they would send a "red packet" in the WeChat group; the person who received the highest amount—effectively winning the "luckiest draw"—would get the chance to enjoy a free buffet dinner. This prize had to be redeemed within three days, or it would expire.

Although I won on a Sunday, it was actually an official workday in China because the upcoming October 1–7 period was a holiday. I also had a group meeting that evening, so I went to enjoy my free buffet dinner on Monday evening instead. Since the restaurant was quite far away, I left at 5:30 PM and arrived around 7:20 PM. I had to catch the 9:30 PM bus back; otherwise, the taxi fare would have exceeded the cost of the buffet itself. As I was dining alone, I managed to finish my meal in about an hour.

Now, let me share my experience. Every item here is prepared using authentic Pakistani recipes to perfection. Although the variety of dishes is far more limited compared to buffets in Bangladesh—by my estimate, less than half the number—finding such food in this foreign land feels like discovering a rare treasure; after all, while other Chinese buffets might offer a wider selection, they generally do not serve Halal food. I began my meal with some salad, chana chaat (spiced chickpeas), potato samosas, and vegetable pakoras. I am quite fond of fried snacks and can easily polish off two or three samosas and five to seven pakoras in no time—treats I sorely miss, given how readily available they are back in Bangladesh.

After finishing the starters, I turned my attention to the main courses. Since I love naan bread, I wasted no time in grabbing two pieces—one butter naan and one garlic naan—to pair with the mutton white korma, which was incredibly tender and delicious. I also helped myself to some kebabs. There were three varieties available: seekh kebab, reshmi kebab, and malai boti (along with tikka boti).

There were two types of complimentary drinks, along with two varieties of rice and a wide selection of main courses. As a Bangladeshi, I have a strong preference for rice over naan, so I usually consume larger portions of rice. I am a huge fan of biryani, even though there are distinct flavor differences between Pakistani and Bangladeshi styles. However, since I rarely get to eat food from back home, any kind of biryani tastes like ambrosia to me. After finishing my naan, I served myself some biryani rice accompanied by Mutton White Korma and Butter Chicken, along with a side of sautéed vegetables.

They also offered a special Mandi rice; it was whitish in color and, despite lacking heavy spices, boasted a very rich flavor profile. Both the biryani and Mandi rice were prepared using Basmati rice. The biryani rice featured the usual blend of spices and saffron, whereas the Mandi rice was relatively plain and served with a steamed chicken leg piece.

I helped myself to rice twice because I really enjoy it. However, alongside the mutton and butter chicken, I also tried a few other dishes with the rice. Among them was a delicious vegetable dish featuring pumpkin and green peas. I also sampled small portions of chana (chickpeas), dal mash, keema curry, chana masala, and chicken jalfrezi.

Finally, I wrapped up the dessert course with two gulab jamuns and some jalebis. Although Shahi Kheer was available, I didn't try it. There were also fruit salad, popcorn, and crackers, but I simply didn't have the stomach space or time to try everything. So, after finishing dessert, I quickly wrapped up my dinner and headed back to my dormitory; it was around 10:50 PM by the time I reached my room.
