That’s the title of the book I’m reading right now, and I’m really digging it. It’s written by that English guy who was on that TLC show Clean Sweep (is that even on anymore?) He’s a professional organizer and has written several books. This one is based on the premise that you can’t get healthy, lose weight, and get your diet under control unless you’ve got your shit together in other areas of your life as well. Namely, if you’re living in chaos and clutter and your kitchen is a mess, you aren’t going to want to spend time there cooking healthy meals and enjoying the pleasure of sitting down for a meal with your loved ones.
I love that he tells it like it is. It isn’t politically correct, it isn’t full of touchy-feely psychobabble, and it’s completely straightforward. He’s saying things that people need to hear. But! He isn’t being a jerk about it, either. Much as he is on Clean Sweep, he’s firm but respectful - a master of Tough Love! I’m liking it a lot. It’s helping me jump right into “spring cleaning” and getting my house and life together, which is something I’ve been sorely neglecting for a long time.
It sucks that moms do that - and we all do it, too! We take care of everyone else, and at the end of the day when we finally have a spare moment, do we want to exercise? Do we want to ::gasp:: go to bed early and get some much needed rest? Do we want to plan out our menu for the week? I don’t! I want to sit on the couch with a glass of wine and watch my recording of Medium. I want to get online and read Perez Hilton. I want to relax my mind and waste time doing NOTHING. Just sitting there, not wiping anyone’s butt or anyone’s nose, not sweeping up a mess or folding a basket of clothes, just…taking part in some guilty pleasure. Enough of that! I’m trying to get it in my head that I can go to bed early, get up early, still find time to relax and take care of myself, and feed ALL of us healthy meals, and not just my child. It makes no sense at all that I meticulously plan out every bite that goes into my child’s mouths, and I just eat whatever.
I need someone to mother ME!
