In light of recent events ... halt, das ist der deutsche Part.
Hallo,
nachdem ich gestern, wie auch im gestrigen Post geschrieben, die Manjaro-Installation auf meinem Laptop ans Maschinen-Jenseits verloren habe, kommt nun heute thematisch passend und rein kausal auch zusammenhängend ein Bericht darüber, wie der aktuelle Manjaro-Installer so drauf ist. Stimmungsmäßig, meine ich.

Beachtet, dass ich zwar englische Sprache wähle, weil dann die Bedienung einheitlicher ist und deswegen auch das Fehlersuchen im Internet; die Datums- und sonstige Formate aber auf Deutsch.
Bla Tastatur.
Für mich hat sich die German (no dead keys) bewährt, da die Tasten, die sowas^ und sowas° und sowas` und sowas´ oÄ schreiben, nicht warten, ob man einen schicken "Buchstaben mit Schnörkel" schreiben will, sondern gleich das Sonderzeichen raushauen.
Zur Partitionierung: Ich wähle hier "Manuelle Partitionierung", wovon ich aber leider keinen Screenshot habe. Mein altes System lief mit LVM, weil ich viel positives gelesen hatte, zB dass Partitionstabellen quer über das Device verteilt, was redundanter ist, und Snapshots, und easy Resizing usw. Da ich mich aber immer noch so schlecht damit auskenne, wähle ich dieses Mal ein ganz einfaches ext4 mit LUKS for encryption. (Ich hoffe, der Setup kriegt den Bootloader vernünftig konfiguriert für Verschlüsselung - ansonsten weiß ich mittlerweile leider/zum Glück, wie man Hand anlegt.)
(Achtung: Falsches Label für /boot, funktioniert so nicht, unten nachlesen!)
Eine Swap Partition (SP) (Auslagerungspartition) von >12GiB ist mir wichtig, weil für Hibernation (Ruhemodus) eine SP > verbautem RAM erforderlich ist. Der Rest der kleinen SSD wird aufgeteilt über 20GiB /home und 65GiB /, wie es sich bewährt hat. 512MiB für /boot sorgen dafür, dass man auch mal mehrere Kernel rumliegen lassen kann.
Alles Geschmackssache, außer das "Log in automatically..." vielleicht, weil dann der Laptop potentiell ungesperrt ist, was ein Sicherheitsrisiko darstellen kann.

PS: Ich habe heute am Schluss noch wirklich viel Zeit verschwendet. Der Manjaro-Installer hat sich nämlich ungefähr sechs mal ganz am Schluss beendet mit dem Kommentar, er könne keine FAT32-Partition erstellen.
Was ich dann irgendwann herausgefunden habe, als ich quasi auf Debug Log geschalten habe: Labels für FAT-Partitionen können maximal 11 Zeichen haben, meins hatte 12. Ernsthaft? Keine vernünftige Fehlermeldung? (Gut, hätte fatlabel anschauen können, das habe ich tatsächlich in der Ausgabe irgendwie übersehen. Naja, man lernt nie aus.)
PS: swap hat als Grenze übrigens 16 Zeichen laut man pages, schneidet aber ab, statt zu crashen. Toll. Wieso nicht gleich so!!11

About the partitioning: I choose "Manual partitioning", but I don't have a screenshot of it. My old system ran with LVM, because I had read a lot of positive things, e.g. that partition tables are distributed across the device, which is more redundant, and snapshots, and easy resizing etc.. But since I still know so little about it, this time I choose a very simple ext4 with LUKS for encryption. (I hope the setup gets the bootloader configured for encryption - otherwise I know fortunately how to do it).

All a matter of taste, except the "Log in automatically..." maybe, because then the laptop is potentially unlocked, which can be a security risk.

PS: I really wasted a lot of time at the end today. The Manjaro installer quit about six times at the very end with the comment that it couldn't create a FAT32 partition.
What I found out at some point when I switched to debug log, so to speak: Labels for FAT partitions can have a maximum of 11 characters, mine had 12. Seriously? No reasonable error message? (Well, could have looked at fatlabel, I actually missed that in the output somehow. Well, you never stop learning).
PS: swap has 16 characters as a limit according to man pages, by the way, but truncates instead of crashing. Great. Why not like that!!11
