The Boys - Is it any good??
So I recently heard about a new superhero-themed tv series on Amazon Prime that everyone was recommending, this new and amazing series was called the Boys. It got my attention when i looked up its score on IMDB, the result was a very impressive 9/10. I base a lot of my filtering of new things to what on IMDB and trust its ratings, with The Boys having such a great score I guess it was worth a what. It must be good to get a 9/10.....right??
Well, the short answer is yes, yes it is really that good, so let's get into it and talk about what i did and didn't like about The Boys.
What I Didn't Like??
There is very little to not like and if I'm being picky the only thing that stood out for the wrong reasons was the accent of one of the main characters, Billy Butcher. Billy is a man who hates "Supes", his hatred is strongest for a superhero called Homelander who he holds responsible for his wife's death. His accent was an attempt at a British one, but it came across (to me personally) as more like an Australian one. I'm British and I only realised his attempted accent when halfway through the series he was referred to as the "British guy".
The accent just didn't seem to fit with his look, overall persona and most importantly didn't sound British. The result was that it distracted me when he was on screen initially and took some time to get used to.
What I Did Like?
Almost everything else i liked in the series, the characters, the acting, the visuals, the pacing was all excellent but what makes this so special is one thing in particular…….perspective
This is the thing that sets this appear from any other superhero-themed movies or series, it’s what makes it unique, fresh and entertaining. The film flirts back and through between the viewpoint of the heroes and the "normal guy" and how these two outlooks can cross over at times leading to unexpected results.
We also get to see the real side to superheroes, the challenges they face, the real lives they live, the pressure they feel from society and their peers. Some much focus typically is on the “superhero” part of the character and little time is used to explore everything else, the Boys focus on the everyday life of its characters and explores all of these fully.
The series visits the interesting and obvious question of how society would deal with a rogue superhero. How would we control them, and could we even do this? I also love how the series distinctly shows how these heroes are viewed as nothing more than cash cows to business and letting them do real hero work is an afterthought, making a real difference to society takes a back seat to the endless allure of money and power.
If you haven’t already watched this series I highly recommend it, would I give it a 9/10? Absolutely!
