Whenever I feel like something is wearing me out, I remind myself why I’m doing it, and the feeling goes away.
Today at the office, a colleague told me that he’s come to think it was a bad decision to leave his job at a multinational company—where he worked shifts in remote areas—for his current job at a domestic company, where he works an 8-hour day, 5 days a week.
Of course, the reason for this thought was based on the huge difference in salary. At the multinational company, he earned far, far more.
But then we came to the conclusion that the time he’s been able to spend with his parents—who, in addition to being elderly, are in poor health—and the time he’s been able to devote to his personal growth and his family is priceless.
I was wondering: How much could the time I spend with my children be worth—watching them sleep every night, accompanying them to all their activities, watching them grow, supporting them when they need me, being able to guide them, and giving them my love? There’s no amount of money in the world that could pay for that.
We certainly have financial limitations, although we have everything we need and then some, but when I think about whether it’s worth trading what I have for 21 days of absence each month, my answer is no, it’s not worth it.
My children wouldn’t be who they are today without me by their side. And I love who they are.
In my colleague’s case, who could afford to pay for all the times he’s had to rush from his current job to his parents’ house to take care of them, take them to the doctor, and make sure they’re okay?
I didn’t tell him this, but I think his dad is still alive because he’s been there for him, and whenever his dad has been seriously ill, he’s been able to stay with him for as long as necessary.
He wouldn’t have that flexibility if he were at a camp in another country that he had to reach by helicopter.
The good thing is that he’s aware of this and has concluded that, given his current situation, quitting that other job was definitely the best decision.
I told him what I said at the beginning of this post: sometimes, all it takes is remembering why we chose something or why we’re doing something to feel reassured that we’re on the right path.
And these are the thoughts I’d like to share with you today, my friends.
Every day offers us a blank canvas, ready for us to build our dreams, stroke by stroke.
To all of you, thank you for joining me on this journey through these words.
Thank you very much
