Barge or Ponto is a type of ship with flat hull or a floating large box, used for transporting goods and towed by tugboats or used to accommodate the tides as on floating docks.
Pontoons are also used to transport cars across the river, in areas that do not yet have a bridge. Very widely used in the 1960s until the 1980s on the cross-lane of Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua. Now most have been replaced with bridges.
For tourist purposes, pontoons are also still used. To improve the stability of the ship is usually used two pontoons are combined in parallel.
tonkang itself does not have a propulsion system like a ship in general. The manufacture of barges is also different because it is only a construction course, without a system like a ship in general. Barges are commonly used for transporting large quantities of cargo such as wood, coal, sand and others. In Indonesia barge is widely produced in the area of Batam (Riau Islands) which is one of the production base of shipping in Indonesia.
