I am a huge foodie & wouldn’t think twice about dropping 200 bucks for a meal at a restaurant.
But i am also “all about saving money and personal finance”
It struck me: Most people believe that “personal finance” and “spending money” are polar opposites.
This couldn’t be further from the truth –
Toilet Paper Thief vs Spends On What She Loves
Look at 2 people – we’ll call them X and Y.
X is your typical frugal saver. With OUT a personal finance system but he tries his best to save. Cooking ramen at home to save money.
Walks or take the buss instead of the subway so he can cut 10 cents per day on his trip to the office. Warddroobe consist in 1 pair of jeans, thats used over & over ;nicks soap/toothpaste & ketchup from hotels and resturants &picks up 5-cent coins from the ground.
Once all that is done, Y has a few hundred dollars left over each month which he can spend on the things he loves, no matter how much they cost: meals, purses, massages or what ever– in short, everything that makes it awesome to be ALIVE
Y wount break a sweat if his cash runs out before the end of the month. He simply stays home, cooks AS In a couple of days, he’ll receive his next monthly salary, automatically save/invest/pay off his bills, and with the amount of money left over, continue spending on the things he loves.
Who leads a richer life?
In the past months, I’ve had a few $325 dinners, saved $2,505 , bought a new tv, traded 3k in bitcoins, gave out 8k of SP and last night, I paid as much as $14 for a glas of wine (that last one was totally not worth it ;) LOL ). I did all of the above absolutely guilt-free, because I’ve built, and followed, a personal finance system that takes care of my saving, investing and payments.
On the other hand, the act of saving –
either by having cash in a bank or by experiencing a significant savings on a product or service – brings savers intense pleasure. The victory of a good bargain makes everyone feel good, but savers feel the rush even more since it’s a relief from the discomfort of needing to spend.
If you’re a spender, you can’t delay the gratification.
With cash in front of you, just like the marshmallow, you can’t resist the urge to have it right now even if you’d have more later. That’s why you don’t have much savings in the bank, but it doesn’t bother you. You’ve been happy making purchases and enjoying them in the moment. It’s worked out well enough for long enough, so you just stick with the habit.
While many people take pleasure in buying things, savers don’t feel that same way. Instead, you’re uncomfortable with shopping, and you feel real emotional pain when you’re paying.
- But what makes you tick and brings you pleasure as a saver?
- Are you missing out on some of life’s simple, inexpensive joys?
Researchers explain that two primary motivators drive savers: pain and pleasure, the rumor that you cant be BOTH types, are utter BS, & No you dont grow UP, being one OR the other
