"During the Turkish invasion of most of Banat, one town remained unconquered. The brave Jakob Heneman deceived the superior enemy and thus earned the title of nobleman.
AT THE END of the 18th century, when the Turks crossed the Danube and devastated the towns in Banat, which then belonged to Hungary, only Vršac remained unconquered! A group of 75 brave citizens of Vršac, led by the brave farmer Jakob Heneman, cunningly deceived a superior enemy and thus saved their town and property from certain ruin. Thanks to that, Vršac was later proclaimed a free royal city, and Henemann was granted nobility.
In the Russo-Turkish war, in which the Hungarians were allies of the Russians, the Ottomans sowed fear of brutal murders and robberies everywhere. Emperor Joseph II therefore withdrew to Timisoara with the Hungarian army in 1788 and left Banat to be the prey of the Pagans, who were advancing from the direction of Orsha. By his order, the frightened population also fled to the northern parts, while the army set fire to many places on its own during the withdrawal and destroyed the warehouses, so that the enemy would not benefit from them.
Vrsac, which at that time was divided into Serbian and German parts, should have been left to that fate. Since the tsar's army had already withdrawn, the locals and governors fled to Det, Cakovo, Timisoara, Arad, Zrenjanin and Petrovaradin. Because the Ottomans were at their door - they burned and destroyed the village of Keveriš, half an hour away from them. Only Heneman's group refused the order to leave the town, determined to try to oppose the superior Turkish army and thus save their property."
" In order for the enemy to think that a larger imperial army was encamped in Vršac, they quickly dug up the place, placed uniformed guards on the outskirts of the town, set fires in the streets, and raised a terrible noise with drums and other devices. Thus, they intimidated the superior Turkish horde, which had between 700 and 800 people, so much that they did not dare to attack them, but, deceived, withdrew to Alibunar - Tamas Fodor from the Association of Antiques Lovers "Felix Mileker" tells us."
