I visited Belgrade and since Skadarlija was a famous bohemian street nearby ... I decided to meet her because I had never been. Many famous writers spent the night in those taverns and lived a different life ...
And I decided to dedicate this post to a great challenge of #WednesdayWalk hosted by @tattoodjay,who this time is collaborating with another positive #MakemeSmile challenge hosted by
@elizacheng
:-)
The first buildings on the ground of today's Skadarlija were built around 1717. In the middle of the 19th century, there was a Gypsy neighborhood (Šićan-mala) with fourteen houses, which in 1872 officially became Skadarska Street.
Only a few years later, there were about a hundred houses in Skadarska, the industrial complex "Mala Pivara", about twenty wells and the Skadarska fountain. At the beginning of the 20th century, as well as between the two wars, Skadarlija slowly gained a tavern. To this day, the cobblestones have remained and defend the tradition of this ethno corner of Belgrade.
If Paris is the capital of the world, Montmartre is the capital of Paris; if Belgrade is the crossroads of the world's roads, Skadarlija is his soul. (Kosta Dimitrijevic)
Three Hats Tavern...
Two Deer
In the middle of the 20th century, more precisely in 1966, according to the project of the architect Uglješa Bogunović, the reorganization of Skadarlija began. The goal was to revive the tradition, but also to modernize it. Since then, the Skadar pedestrian zone has been restored, cobblestones, lanterns and candelabras have been restored, and the cafes "Three Hats", "Two Deer" and "Skadarlija "There are days", "Golden jug" and "Two white doves" were rearranged.
Golden jug!
In the 1970s, Skadarlija "twinned" with the Parisian bohemian district of Montmartre. After the arrangement, Queen Elizabeth, King Juan Carlos of Spain and Queen Sofia, George W. Bush Sr., Willie Brant, Margaret Thatcher, Alberto Moravia, Sandro Pertini, Gina Lolobrigida, Bert Lancaster were in Skadar.
Before the start of the season, a flag is raised at the fountain ... a variety of international cuisines can be found there to satisfy everyone's taste.
...Upon entering Skadarlija, at the end of its flag with symbolic markings (girardo-hat, black cane and red carnation), a well-intentioned message was written in large letters: "Skadarlija - the center of artistic bohemianism, is a tradition of creation for a century. this corner of Belgrade to have fun and entertain, try to conjure up a long time ago with your imagination. Remember all those generations of poets and actors, journalists and painters, bohemians known and unknown ...
..So when you come to the bohemian district of Belgrade, remember the romance of old times and try to experience it and enjoy it. Don't forget that its ancient inhabitants and regular guests ....spent their best days at night...
If you come to visit Belgrade, let this street be unavoidable for you ...
