Blackhouse Dinners

A blackhouse is a structure made from stone without mortar. (A dry-stone wall building) The tradition is said to have begun in Scotland. 

The name blackhouse may have been derived by any of these three means:

1. Early blackhouses didn't have windows and peat was burned for warmth. Peat smoke eventually turned the inside of the house black.

2. In Gaelic the word thatch (which is what the roof is made from), sounds similar to the Gaelic word for black. So the translation may have gotten confused over time.

3. Another mix-up over time with the word blockhouse. 

Blackhouse Dinners 

A blackhouse with a living roof was built in Grand Valley Ontario in 2009. A simple dinner request by a friend of the family has since grown to over 500 guests per year.

The evening begins with an informative farm tour by your most gracious host.

In the Blackhouse you will be served a delicious 5 course meal made from organic fruits and vegetables and meats mostly produced right on the farm.

Your most gracious host and owner will spend some time answering questions about the blackhouse and tell you stories on it's history.

This is such a novel 'fine dining' experience.
