Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
Birds are foolish and they are stupid, even if it results in the destruction of their own lives. A net is spread in their view, but it does them no good. They are lured into the snare easily by the attraction of the bait. Danger and the warning of it is clear, but this doesn't slow them down at all. Their destruction and stupidity, and the certainty of it is a warning to all men out there.
Here we have a classic proverb. It is a dark saying of the wise, which is needing a little interpretation. ( Proverbs 1:6 ). What a glorious book that was written by You Lord! Dear reader, are you ready? Ready to explore the meaning of these challenging words before us? This proverb, just like all the others, carries very important instruction and wisdom for your success and safety in life.
A fowler hunted wild birds for sport or for food. He generally used nets, and was a bird-catcher. Using food as bait, he would use a net or spread a net that could serve it's purpose of dropping over the bird or gathering it together to trap the bird. He would drop the net over the bird after waiting for it to come for the easy food. The fowler has his easy prey because the bird was unable to fly away.
What is vain, in this Proverb? Otherwise called "a foolish waste". The Proverb starts with, "Surely in vain". What is the vanity exactly? What is the event that is so wasteful? For the fowler to spread his net while the bird is watching, is that a foolish waste? Because the bird will know better than to approach the bait. Or, is it foolish or worthless for the bird to see the net being spread by the fowler, because he will quickly fly to the bait once the fowler is out of sight.
The correct interpretation is the latter one. While a bird is watching and then laying the trap will certainly not help the bird because it will fly to the bait even if it is at the cost of it's own life. The bird will not perceive the risk which is fatal, so it is worthless, or in vain. A bird won't fly away because it is too greedy for the bait, it is too stupid to see the present danger. By the context this interpretation is correct, which describes men who are wicked running to violent crimes ( Proverbs 1:16 ) that will be the cause or result in their own loss of life. ( Proverbs 1:18 ). Regarding the bible, if you want to determine the intent of individual verses, you study the context. Here we have King Solomon, who is the perfect father, warning his son against companions whom are evil. ( Proverbs 1:10–19 ).
Despite clear warnings which are in full view, warnings of danger, wicked men still pursue sinful lives. They see other people dying horrible deaths, even young people, they read of criminals who are arrested and punished, warnings which are strong of divine judgements to come they hear, and their consciences tells them this, "Your actions are condemned by God". Yet they still fly to the bait. The gain of theft which is unrighteous ( Proverbs 1:19 ). The spoil and precious substance of robbery. ( Proverbs 1:13 ).
Without regard for the danger, wicked men pursue sin. The net then falls on them suddenly. ( Ecclesiastes 9:12 ). Althought the danger is clearly visible and it is there all along, they deceive only thrmselves thinking they will not get caught. They continue to sin regardless of them knowing God's judgement, with sinners. ( Romans 1:32 ). Why is it that they are so stupid? They are made as vulnerable and foolish as birds because of the power of satan and the deceitful nature of sin. See below Scripture...
Do not be mistaken, God will not be mocked! ( Galatians 6:7 ). The bird which is sinful will be taken. The net will fall. For the wicked, God has set his own snare and gin, craftily. ( Amos 3:1–8 ). This is what will happen to the wicked...

Get far away from the bait which is a temptation for you! The net that has been laid for your soul, run away from that danger! You cannot play with a strange woman, follow any habit which is sinful, or mingle / keep company with men who are wicked without it destroying you and trapping you! Youthful lusts, flee! Run! Fly away! Get away!
