honestly, this is the kind of crime series that can easily make you say, โJust one more episode.โ and before you know it, it's 3am. ...
The series follows Isaiah Stiles, an LAPD detective who becomes obsessed with catching Coltrane Wilder, a very intelligent and extremely dangerous criminal mastermind and Coltrane isn't your regular street criminal.
This guy plans, He thinks ahead, He studies people and when he decides to do something, you can almost guarantee that there is another plan hiding behind the first plan...
That immediately made the show interesting for me because this isn't simply โpolice chase bad guy.โ, It's more like two very intelligent men playing chess while everybody around them keeps getting hurt..
Isaiah wants Coltrane badly, and there's a personal reason behind that obsession. His pursuit isn't just about doing his job anymore. It's about revenge, pain and unfinished business and that's where Nemesis becomes more interesting because the more Isaiah tries to destroy Coltrane, the more you start wondering whether he is actually becoming the kind of person he's supposed to be fighting... That's something I really enjoyed..
The show doesn't make everybody completely good or completely evil.. People make terrible decisions for reasons that sometimes make sense, People lie to protect their families, People betray each other, People choose money, People choose revenge and sometimes people choose the person they love even when they know it's going to cost them everything..
Coltrane was probably my favourite character... Y'lan Noel did a really good job with him. There's something about watching a criminal who is always thinking three steps ahead that makes these kinds of shows addictive...
He's dangerous, but he's not just a mindless villain...You actually understand some of his motivations..
Then you have Isaiah, played by Matthew Law... I liked him too, especially because he's not presented as some perfect police officer..
He's angry, He's emotional, He's obsessed and sometimes he crosses lines..
There were moments where I was actually asking myself whether I was supposed to support this man or tell him to calm down... That's what makes their rivalry work, they're not complete opposites... In some ways, they're more alike than either of them would like to admit.
Another thing I enjoyed is the action..
The series doesn't spend forever building up to something before giving you the actual thing...
There are robberies, shootouts, police chases, betrayals and some really tense confrontations...
The opening heist especially grabbed my attention because it immediately tells you what kind of show you're watching...
This isn't going to be some slow detective story where everybody spends six episodes looking at fingerprints.
People are actually moving, Things are happening, nd somebody is always trying to get away with something but the action isn't the only reason I liked it...
The family side of the story surprised me..
The characters have relationships outside the criminal world, and those relationships actually matter.. You see how their choices affect their wives, children, friends and people who didn't ask to be involved in their problems and sometimes that made the show more emotional than I expected because it's easy to watch a criminal movie and say, โWell, he's a criminal, so whatever happens to him is his problem.โ
But Nemesis keeps reminding you that these people have families..
Their decisions don't happen in a vacuum..
Somebody always pays for them..
There are moments when certain characters make decisions that had me shouting at my screen like:
โWHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!โ and yes, there are a few moments where the story becomes a little too dramatic but honestly, that's part of the fun... This is a crime thriller..
I'm not expecting everybody to make sensible decisions.. If they did, we wouldn't have a show.
What really kept me watching was the relationship between Isaiah and Coltrane...
I wanted to know who was going to win but more importantly, I wanted to know what each of them was willing to sacrifice to win because that's really what Nemesis is about..
