Honestly, this series caught me off guard because imagine disappearing for almost a decade, building yourself a quiet life somewhere in South Korea, and thinking you've finally escaped your old life...
Only for the person sent to kill you to be your own daughter... Yeah... That's how this madness starts...
Butterfly follows David Jung, played by Daniel Dae Kim, a former U.S. intelligence operative who faked his own death and disappeared from the world he used to belong to...
David has been living quietly in South Korea, trying to stay away from his past but apparently, the past wasn't ready to leave him alone..
A mysterious private intelligence organization called Caddis is after him and one of the people sent to deal with him is Rebecca, a young and highly trained assassin... The problem?.. Rebecca is David's daughter and she doesn't exactly know the full story about what happened between them...
Now imagine being hunted by someone who wants you dead, while you're also trying to convince that same person that you're actually her father...
That alone was enough to get me hooked and honestly, Daniel Dae Kim was one of the biggest reasons I enjoyed this show..
The man looked comfortable in this role..
David isn't some loud superhero who walks into a room and starts shooting everybody.. He's older, experienced, calculated and you can tell this man has done some terrible things in his past... But he's also a father.. That's where the character becomes interesting..
He's not just trying to survive, He's trying to reconnect with a daughter who believes he abandoned her and that part actually gave the series some emotional weight...
Rebecca also surprised me...At first, I wasn't completely sure about her character, but as the story continued, I started understanding her more...
She's dangerous, but she's also damaged..
She's been shaped by people who trained her to become a weapon, and now she's discovering that some of the things she believed about her life may not be true and that creates a really interesting father daughter relationship... Except this isn't one of those wholesome family reunions..
Their version of bonding involves running from assassins, getting into fights and trying not to kill each other.
The action is another reason I kept watching... The series has some really good chase sequences and fight scenes, and the South Korean setting makes everything look even better...
Seoul, Busan, Daegu and the other locations give the show a different atmosphere from the usual American spy thriller... It feels international..
You get English and Korean dialogue, different locations, different characters and a story that doesn't feel trapped in one country and visually?... It looks good...
Very good but here's where I started having problems...
The story...
Sometimes the story just goes off plot and there's always a hidden agenda..At some point, I was just watching and thinking:
“Okay... so who is actually telling the truth here?” and sometimes the twists work.
Other times, you can see them coming from a mile away...
The show also has a habit of slowing down just when things are getting interesting... You'll get a really good action sequence, and I'm completely locked in...
Then suddenly we're having a long conversation about somebody's past... I understand why those scenes are important, but sometimes I just wanted the story to move...
The family drama is also a little uneven.
David and Rebecca should be the emotional heart of the entire series, and there are moments where their relationship works beautifully but there are also times when I felt the emotional connection wasn't as strong as it should have been and that's a shame because the basic idea is actually powerful...
A father who abandoned his daughter, A daughter who grew up believing a different version of her father, Then years later, they meet again... Except she's been trained to kill him.. There is SO much emotional material there.
I just wish the series pushed that side a little harder.. But Still, I enjoyed the show.
The six-episode format helped because it didn't drag for ten or twelve episodes... Every episode moves the story forward, and there is always another problem waiting just around the corner..
