Daniel was the second son of his dad. His dad owned the family oyster business which has been passed down from generations.
His dad, now old, needed to pass the business down. As usual and according to the tradition of the family, Daniel's immediate elder brother, Jacob, was the rightful heir of the business. Everyone knew and was sure that Jacob was going to be the one to get the business because he was also very smart and was already a successful businessman running his own multi-million closet industry that he built from scratch. Daniel who worked as a medical doctor and had no idea in running a business. Jacob, on the other hand, expressed no emotion towards his dad's decision.
Few days after the big announcement, their dad called for a family meeting to celebrate his retirement and Daniel's ascension.
The meeting was a dinner at their family house. Both parents were present including Jacob, his four younger siblings and some other relatives that were also in the business.
At the meeting Jacob seemed very grumpy and kept to himself. Daniel noticed and started to suspect that it was because of his father's decision and rumors that were going around because he was his dad's favorite and Jacob didn't follow the path his Dad planned for them.
At the dinner when everyone was seated on the large dinning table, their dad took a fork and cup and clamped them together as he called everyone's attention by hitting the cup.
“Today we all came to celebrate my retirement and Daniel's ascension. But also I know everyone sees the elephant in the room," he stopped and cleared his throat before he continued, “I have heard rumors going about that I chose Daniel as the heir to my business because he is obviously my favorite."
Jacob smiled for the first since he arrived on hearing his dad's word.
His dad then turned to face him directly, “the only reason behind my decision is because you are very successful in your closet line and I didn't want to burden you with more," he said.
Everyone else in the room kept a serious face but Jacob found a sense of humor in everything his dad had said.
“Well, I am very thankful that you made what you felt was the right decision. And to be honest if it was up to me I would give it to Daniel or any other person but me. I wasn't ever going to accept it because I want to concentrate on my own company and make it bigger," Jacob explained to everyone.
“So why the mood this whole time?" Lily, their sibling asked using the wine cup to hide her mouth.
“It's just stress from work today," he said with a mild laughter.
“Besides having Daniel as dad's favorite has kept dad off my neck for a very good time," Jacob said as he scattered Daniels hair like that of a dog.
"I was beginning to get scared for a minute," Daniel exhaled.
"Why? You shouldn't be, bro. I'm happy Dad gave it to you and i got your back anytime, kiddo," Jacob said with a wink, in an attempt to piss off his brother.
"Don't call me kiddo. I'm a man!," Daniel frowned.
Everyone laughed it over and the dinner carried on without any problems hanging in the air.
