Kids can be a handful, but I don't blame them. I just want to believe there's a little-big evil spirit that whispers to them once in a while to go haywire. I was once a problem to myself too. As an adult now, I think about all the crazy things I did as a kid and I can only thank God for saving my stupid, silly ass.
I did alot of dumb stuff. Some I remember, others I don't. Some even left a scar or two to serve as a reminder of those times. Here's one that cracks me up each time I remember it.
My parents had gone out one day, leaving me, my younger siblings and our unshackled mischief. Bored and curious, I guess, we decided to go play a game with one of the neighbours, our peers.
We would hang an empty bucket of custard somewhere and then whoever hits it with the stone fired from a catapult -which we made by stretching and folding rubber bands- wins. It sounded like so much fun at the time. But the problem was that, there was no place where we could hang the empty bucket, and nobody was willing to help hold it.
My then-naive self didn't think of why every other person wouldn't hold up the bucket, so considering myself the genius one, I volunteered to hold the bucket for the first person to hit the mark. I was hoping we'd take turns after my act of willful service, but unfortunately, I thought wrong.
As soon as I held the bucket in position, just right at the top of my head, the first person who took a shot missed and hit me right at the centre of my forehead with the stone. Shit! The way i dropped the bucket and screamed, it was as if the foolishness in my idea departed from me at that instant.
Because right at that moment, I was already thinking about what I was going to tell my parents. There was no way on God's earth that I was going to tell them what I did. Would not even make sense, particularly because I'm supposed to show better judgement as the eldest sibling.
Only me know wetin my forehead and wall surface see that day. I kept pressing on the injury spot to make sure the swelling went flat. The pain I endured that day! I been know say anything wey make my parents notice am that evening, I go explain tire.
Very stupid of me also to think they'd not notice. Well, actually, they didnt. Remember I mentioned my siblings and I were home and had gone out to play together? Trust the little demons! Even after my bribing and pleading with them to not speak a word about the incident, which they complied with for a short time, mysiater still sold me out. I don't blame her much, the gist was probably too sweet to hold in. The worst part was my brother calling me Goliath. You know the biblical David and Goliath story, right? Yes, that one!
He said when the stone just hit my forehead, that was the story that came to mind, but that I spoilt the story by not falling down to the ground.
E pain me!
Children and stupidity na sha 5 & 6. Nothing anybody go tell me.
