The last raised beds to harvest for this season were all the sweet potatoes. That in itself was quite the job, with the largest frame full of vines and the two smaller metal beds too. Plus, we had two grow bags to do as well.
You can see how thick the vines are. I did cut some of the newest leaves to par-boil for greens. I put them into freezer bags to use at a later date.
Once the vines were all removed from the beds, we started to carefully remove the soil around the main plants.
Each of the grow bags had nice large potatoes. Not bad for growing them in them compared to the ones grown in the raised beds.
These were a few from the metal raised beds. The sizes were about the same, but with more skinny ones than in the grow bags.
Here is the entire haul from the eight slips that were planted out in mid-May.
Some of them are huge, which I'm totally delighted with.
I put them out in the greenhouse to cure before I put them in a bin in the garage to store over the winter months.
There were a lot of small tubers that I peeled and cooked for dinner this week. I didn't think they would store very long, so we ate them!
While digging up the tubers, we were surprised to find these large potatoes. I knew that a potato plant had grown among the cabbages this spring, and forgot about it. Nice to have these added to our harvest.
This is a sweet potato flower. I found quite a few hiding among the vines. I've never seen one before. It looks a lot like a morning glory, doesn't it? Next, cleaning up the vegetable garden and finishing picking the last of the peppers. Fall has arrived and my growing season is over. What a year it has been.
